I havent wanted to buy one because of how terribly unreliable the hardware is, but sony forced my hand. How? Like this.
LittleBigPlanet, more than any other game, was my reason for wanting a PS3. I'm a big fan of games that let the player make their own stuff. from full games with RPG Maker, to levels in Megaman Powered Up. LittleBigPlanet had a lot of promise. LittleBigPlanet was pretty much the "killer app" the PS3 needed, something everyone could enjoy, whether they were a hardcore or casual gamer.
Then the game actually came out, and **** started getting deleted left and right. First they cited copyright issues, but that's rather invalid. fair-use and all that. webcomics feature characters and scenarios about all sorts of games all the time. there are hundreds of levels in Megaman Powered Up that are remakes of stages from other games, and named as such. capcom doesnt moderate those. just the ones that have obscene content. our own RPG Maker community is filled not only with games featuring characters from other games, but full remakes and sequels.
They're even deleting God of War stages. KRATOS WAS A PRE-ORDER BONUS FOR LBP. and you're not allowed to make LBP stages based on the game he comes from? What about the other premium costumes like sephiroth and snake? you can use the characters, but you aren't allowed to make stages based on the characters that you can use in the game?
And now, absolutely brilliant, completely original creations are being removed with no explanation at all. and yes, Sony is doing the moderating, not Media Molecule.
Sony said they were embracing user-generated content. Unreal Tournament III first, and then LBP, and who knows what else is supposed to be on the way.
but I don't ****ing care.
With the deletion of the Azure Palace (and a personal favorite of mine, world of color) in LittleBigPlanet, it is no longer safe to use the level creation part of LittleBigPlanet anymore. Whatever you make may very well be deleted, so why invest ANY time into the damn thing? and if it's deleted off the servers, it gets deleted locally too. and without the level creation part, LittleBigPlanet is nothing. there's no reason to play, let alone own the game.
Good job, Sony. Just when people were starting to love you again. just when all the stupidity flowing out of your company stopped. just when people were on the verge of taking you seriously this generation, you pull THIS. You show off this game, make us want it so badly, and then punish us for using it? GOOD. JOB.
I don't care if they later say it was an accident, an oversight. the damage has been done. the ****up has been made. even if that level and the countless others that were wrongfully deleted come back, this isnt something I can overlook, much less forgive.
So, I'm saving up for an Xbox 360. hardware failures be damned, at least microsoft lets you play games the way they're meant to be played. Unless the PS3 version of a title is VASTLY superior to the 360 version of the same game, I will buy it for the 360. I will only buy third-party exclusives for the PS3 from now on. Sony-published games are not welcome on my shelf until they reform the LBP moderation process, and restore every last wrongfully deleted level. but even then, I'm still getting the 360, and I'll buy games for it over the PS3 every chance I get.
