Do you trust video game reviews?

I do somewhat. Definitly not all of them, though. I mainly use reviews as advice, and then take into account my own personal tastes and perferences when making a choice.

i trust reviewers in general for a gauge of quality and innovation for a game, not necessarily whether or not i will like it

          What Alzar said.

When I read reviews, even if a game got a glowing one, I'm not gonna run out and buy it if it's not in a genre I enjoy, but there ARE exceptions (example: I have no desire to own any of the Halo games, nor any of the Call of Duty games, even if they are rated highly, but I DID get Bioshock, mainly due to reading about the superb storyline, philosophical underpinnings, atmosphere, etc).

Conversely, in a genre I like, such as RPGs or strat-RPGs, I usually don't 100% trust the review. If a game gets rated a 3.5 to 6 out of ten, I'll usually pass. If a game is in the 7 out of 10 range, and the reviews mention some gameplay quirk that tries something different than everything else out there, but does not 100% succeed on all levels, I'll usually give it a chance. If the game gets a 8 to 10 out of 10, and seems to be well-made, but not all that different than everything else out there, I'll usually pass.

Long story short, and I know I'm kinda with this, but if in the reviews, the consensus is that the game tries to do something different or innovative, or has an interesting gameplay hook, I'll usually support it. If a game is well-done, but more of the same, I'm in no hurry.

I use reviews as guides for all of my video game purchases.

I don't really read video game reviews, unless you count the opinions made here at the Pav.

Re: Do you trust video game reviews?

I usually base my game purchases on reviews by EGM and what I read here at the Pav. If it's an older title, then I usually visit Gamespot and read their reviews. Sometimes theres that odd game which got a bad review, but I enjoyed it regardless.

Re: Do you trust video game reviews?

i just watch videos on youtube because watching the game being played is a better indication of quality that hearing some guy who's getting paid talk about it.

I only read reviews AFTER I buy the game.

I just like hearing other people's opinions on it.

If X-Play says it sucks, I won't even consider playing the game.

That's a dumb way to make your purchase.

I mainly look to reviews to find out more about a game. Just to find out what is in it and ****. Then again, I guess that is the entire point of them. Though, I don't usually go with one review. Usually several different reviews from several different sources. Gives a better perspective. If the game seems appealing then I get it. Simple as that.

I trust them for honesty, but I only trust a few reviewers as far as good taste in games goes.
