need some help finding a movie!

so me and the wife were talking about a movie we both remember from our childhood, but we cannot remember the name to save our lives.

its about a boy who has a dog, or meets a dog at some point. it starts out in his room as live action, then an elevator appears and he takes it to some cartoon world where this dog talks to him. there are some blobby looking things that are taking over the cartoon land. cant really remember anything else. ive tried searching for it but no luck.

if anyone has any clue at all please please help me remember this classic!

Could it be the Phantom Tollbooth? It's about a kid named Milo who receives a magic tollbooth that transports him to a cartoon kingdom of wisdom. There's a dog that follows him around named Tock.

Not sure if this is right though, because I don't recall any blobby things. I think his mission is eventually to save two princesses.

YES!!! that is it!!! thank you so much. and i could totally be wrong about the blobby things. its been like 20 years since ive seen it. but that is definitely the title of the movie!

Funny thing, my boyfriend was talking about loving that movie as a kid, and it took us forever to figure it out. It's nice to know that people still love this movie. I think it might be available on youtube, but then again, what isn't?
