You can. Just go to the courthouse and check the registry, or ask to check. It's publicly available.

this is true. the states may have it available online, but we have it available in other ways. also when a sex offender moves into a community, the community is warned.

I believe here in the states the offender actually has to walk door to door and tell people within a certain radius that he/she is a registered sex offender.
