OK, so I didn't watch LOST for most of the season, but I HAVE seen the first and last episodes. After looking at stillframes of the monster, I swear that it looks A LOT like Fluffy the Three-Headed Dog from Harry Potter. At least I thought it looked like it had three heads. But it also sounds mechanical. My fiancée also told me that the monster was referred to as the 'island's security system' by the French chick.
After seeing the first episode, though, it is my theory that Walt's dog is the monster. Notice how Walt conveniently left him on the island when he went on the raft? I think the dog IS the monster, and Walt is trying to stop people from finding out about the island, with which he obviously has some huge psychic link. One flaw in this theory is that the monster was supposedly there before the jumbo jet crash. I still haven't worked that one out.
