    Re: Guild Wars

The whole "free internet play" thing got me to pick up the box today at the store. But it didn't tell me much about it. What's the deal with it? It looked just like any other MMORPG.
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.

The set up is like Diablo. You go into town and meet up with people there to team with then when you leave the city, its your team vs the inviroment. There is a role playing server and a PvP server. If your into the PvP thing, you will want to get on a guild and get a guild hall so you can fight other guilds.

I enjoy it. Its a nice break from CoH and it free to play so I dont feel like I have to play it like I do with the other. Graphics are pretty and the spell animations are good. You can have double skill classes if you want. Only down fall to the game for me is that you cant go everywhere. Its not super limited but I was wanting to be able to run up mountains and such.

Hmm. See, I dig the whole having a character in a world full of real characters bit, but I want an MMORPG where I can go off and be effective by myself without a party or hunting group. I hate having to find people and all that. I like the social aspect of MMORPGS in between killing, but I don't really like trying to chat while I'm whackin' baddies. Every MMORPG I've played makes it way to hard to keep up without devoting hundreds of hours or teaming up to kill stuff. Niether of which I dig. So I doubt this is for me.

Thats what the henchmen are for, I play so late at night my guild is rarely on and I hate find people also. I just grab some henchies and go exploring.

I'm pretty sure that there's a topic about this already.

Hey pinkymadigan, if you ever want to play, let me know. I dont like a lot of conversation when I play besides the necessary stuff. My guild on the other hand gets entirely too chatty for me.

In the pre war part of it you really dont need any help. Post war you do but its cool cause you can hire henchmen.

My char names are Debil in the Flesh and Tias Rhone.

That sounds interesting. I'll check it out. Right now I might be upgrading my monitor (if the wife okays it) and that will be the last thing I'm able to buy for a while... otherwise I'll probably give it a whirl. I've been pretty unexcited about console games for a while and have been looking for a good pc game.

Yeah, but I wonder how long they can keep updates up if they keep it free?

                        Re: Guild Wars

The reason why they are able to keep it free is because of the way its set up. Its not like a true MMORPG where you can fight side by side with several different teams. Whats great about their updates though is that they are continuous. Its not like the patch that Diablo II took like two years to finsih. I started playing the day it was released and there are updates every few days it seems.

Right, but without a subscription fee, how do they continue to pay programmers for additional content to a game they are no longer making money on after the initial sales? Eventually one of two things have to happen:
1 - They add a cost for updates, or charge a subscription fee to play.
2 - New content stops emerging.

                          That's just business.

Theres actually been only two big updates. They dont release stuff constantly.

They have started work on the expansion for the game which will be the same price as the orginal game.

Only two large updates though since the release, there probably wont be much more until the release of the expansion.

(so its not like it gets new content all the time, the last big update was the first time I have seen new content and different stats change.)

As far as content , yes, youre right. But there have been several times that they have fixed bugs, errors, etc etc since the release.
