Firmware 5.0 has been just released for the PSP

The new PSP firmware 5.0 will allow PSP users to connect directly to the PlayStation Store, and then purchase and download a wide selection of media, including movies, games and demos. There is no need to transfer that data through the PlayStation 3 or PC either.


The firmware version 5.0 includes an onscreen QWERTY keyboard which makes web browsing much easier. In addition to that, it also contains a sleep timer, which can be used for shutting off the PSP during musical playback. The video out functionality has also improved a lot, supports interlace displays and allows classic PlayStation titles to play at full-screen size on the TV. The quality of the official headsets has improved as well. They feature a high quality mode, which, when activated, delivers clear and wide-band wireless voice communication.

The on-screen QWERTY keyboard didn't happen and I can't confirm the rest of the stuff, except for the Playstation Store, which is VASTLY improved, and it doesn't use the web-browser.

I feel that this firmware update didn't include enough features to warrent it a 5.0. We just had 4.05 just a few months ago, and such a signifigent leap should have brought more to the table. The Playstation Store is a very nice feature though.

Yep. Games, demos, videos, themes to download, and you can now download Playstation games without using the PS3. You have to pay for a lot of stuff, though.

I'm still working with 3.something on my PSP. I haven't connected to a network in several months.

After fiddling with the confounded cell phone-style keyboard, I reset my PSN password, logged on and got to the Playstation Network store.

Huh, I guess it did happen. Why did I not see this? The shift and cap keys are the same. When pressing shift and hitting a key, it should go back to small letters, but for some reason it doesn't. And I wish they would have expanded the letter count. I HATE running out of room when typing, and then having to go back and somehow fix what you wanted to say. Anyway, I'm still used to the cellphone-style layout.

This whole thing isn't exactly user-friendly.
