    Question.

If you don't want to hear/don't care about what's going on in my life right now, then you don't have to read.

I'm in sort of a mid-summer crisis. I moved into a house expecting my other 2 roommates to move in at the sametime. However, they didn't. Leaving me with the bills to turn on the water, gas, and electric. They also didn't pay the $500 deposit on the house with me. I had to pay it up front. It's been nearly 3 weeks and I'm still waiting for them to fulfill their spoken 'promise' to pay me back for that.

Turning on the water and that $500 deposit has left me bankrupt. Not to mention getting settled into the house and buying a bed. I've barely gotten any money from either of my roommates, and one of them has decided to end all communication for no apparent reason (His cellphone no longer takes incoming calls, and he hasn't been on the internet for quite a while, which is unusual). The other one is getting payed minimum wage for 15 hours a week, which is obviously barely enough to pay for the rent and pay me back on the house deposit. It's a wonder why he even decided to move into a house in the first place.

Basically, I've been shoved into an empty house by myself and have to keep it for these 2 other guys for fall, not knowing for sure if/when they'd move in or if/when they'd pay the bills and pay me back. I have to make a choice, because I don't have a place nearby to fall back to (my parents live several states away now), and I start summer classes in 2 days. Not to mention my job, which has me working afternoon shifts nearly every day of the week.

My question is, should I just leave these guys to their own devices, leave the house which I already payed $500 for, and move in with someone else who's in need of a roommate? Or should I stay with them and hope that they'll come through for me and actually move in and pay all the bills on time with me? My confidence in them is shaky at best. Especially since one of them gets barely any money at all, and has been quoted as saying, "I'm not moving into the house until I can pay for utilities."

There's a place on the campus website where I can find local people in need of roommates, and I've looked there and there are already several options available to me, some of which are far more convenient. So, what should I do?
    ...and that's why.

    Re: Question.

Sounds to me like you're getting hosed, Den. Honestly, I'd say you should find a new place and a new roomie, because you shouldn't have to take care of and pay for that house yourself.

Definitely find more convenient arrangements. If they didn't move in with you now, where's the guarantee that they'll come to the house in the fall? Besides, it's way too expensive to wait for them that long.

I hope that things work out for you.

Sorry Den you got ripped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! but you should not bother wasting your cash you have invested. stay there until you find a better arrangement. Use the house as your base of opperations and search out a place with ONE roomie UNLESS you have their full background already sorted out.

I just moved out of a bad situation last month where I was living and I couldnt be happier for now. good riddence to bad rubbish.

Keep the place, ditch the roomies, advertise that you need new roomies.
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.

Go on a skull-crunching vengeance spree after those freeloaders.

I prefer the cricket bat, but, yeah, basically any type of sports equipment will do.

Yeahhh, the cricket bat would be more suitable for the skull crunch but there's something more elegant about the golf club.

I agree with Pinkymadigan, keep the place and get rid of the roomies. Shouldn't be too hard to find new ones who will pay their share.

                    Re: Question.

The problem with getting new roomies is I already gave one of the guys a key so he could start moving in. And he already moved in some of his stuff. What am I going to say to him?

"Are you on the lease? No? THEN GET OUT."

Tell him he has a certain amount of time to get his stuff before you chunk it. You aren't running a storage facility!

                            Re: Question.

I agree, however, they COULD be on the lease. Which would be problematic. Just because Den paid, doesn't mean they didn't sign the lease. In either case, I suggest talking to your landlord as soon as possible to see if either you can get the money back or whether you can have them removed from the lease, try to work out an arrangement to get rid of them as soon as possible; they sound like bad news.

On the very off chance that your landlord hasn't cashed your check yet, I'd call your bank to see if you could get it canceled, so you can free up the option of moving out yourself.

The worst thing to do is to start looking for a new place thinking that you will get out of this one early without penalty. If you leave now, the landlord will surely assess a fine for leaving without notice/ breaking lease obligations/etc.

So my overall suggestion is to try to sever yourself or your roommates from the lease ASAP.

                              Re: Question.

We haven't even signed a lease yet. In fact, the landlord knows about how my roommates haven't moved in, and has offered for me to just sign it and have them sign it later when they do.

So as far as kicking them out goes, I'm fairly free to do that right now. I'm just not the kind of guy who enjoys doing these kind of things. I mean, they're great guys. I wouldn't want any ill against them. They're just not keeping up their end of the bargain here...

And it's tearing me apart financially...
