    Nixxing Monster XP

Recently in my game I've had cause to consider completely removing XP gain from monsters, with the possible exception of bosses.

Instead, I was thinking of making a quest system for all of the main story line and some side quests in which you would earn your experience through the completion of varies activities and missions assigned to you by NPCs thoughout the world.

As for the monster fights, I was thinking of making armor sets or special items drop from them with a very low probibility rate, something that would give you incentive to fight them, even though you're not gaining experience from them.

I'm still working out the kinks, but I would like peoples opinions on the matter as to wether I should convert my game to something more like this.

Well, you're basically doing the opposite of the "standard" RPG setup, where you grind monsters for XP and perform quests for rare equipment. Um, I think either way will work perfectly fine. What I like about your system is that it will probably make balancing the battles slightly easier for you as the creator. If your instinct is that you'd enjoy a game like this more than the "standard" setup, then I say by all means go for it!

I think it actually gives me several advantages. For starters, it's a good shake up to the older system. Here instead of spending hours and hours grinding on something outside of town, you simply search for a side quest if you want to level.

It will also give me more control of the level at which the people will face bosses, meaning that they can't actually grind to a point that the boss is overly easy. There will only be so many side quests.

It also give me the ability to add drop sets without worring about the characters outlevling the bosses while trying to get said items.

Mostly though, I just don't like dealing with the experience on monsters, and this is an inventive way to get around it.

And thanks for the response. I'm trying to weigh my descision based on what other people think too.
