View Full Version : Resident Evil 4. I love it.

Thanks for convincing me to buy Resident Evil 4. After hitting a wall with Metroid Prime 2 and questioning my desire for video games, Resident Evil 4 has slapped me in the face with it's awesomeness.

I'm only 2 hours into so far but I frikkin' love it! :D

Two quick questions so far:

#1 Is it possible to kill the chainsaw guys with the bags on their heads? I couldn't seem to!

#2 I got 10 of the blue coins and I got the Punisher. Is it worth searching for the last 5? What do you get for finding all 15?

Kire

#1 yes it is. It's just friggin tough.

Damn... I don't remember what happens if you get all 15... regardless, it's easy as pie so you might as well.

And yes, RE4 WA HONTOU NI BEE'S KNEES DESU.

chainsaw guys, best to isolate them, blast them in the head with the rifle (you'll get it soon), wait for them to get up, and do it again. repeat until dead. they drop VERY valuable stones. use only headshots against them.

If you get all fifteen medals before getting the Punisher, he gives it to you upgraded a bit. If you get the Punisher before getting all 15, then getting the rest won't do anything.

Thanks, BZ.

I haven't even gotten the rifle because I've been using the shotgun instead.

I was gonna buy the Red9 but my punisher has better stats all around than it.

This game absolutely rules.

Garr123
02-09-2005, 07:27 PM
The red 9 is the most powerful handgun in the game, and it has the bonus of coming with a stock to make it good at long range.

BeeZee

I recommend getting a decent rifle and upgrading it a bit. It'll come in more than handy later.

Well I've already spent money upgrading the Punisher by 2 levels in each category.

Is it worth dumping it in order to buy the Red9?

Armored
02-09-2005, 09:44 PM
Chainsaw guys go down easy. The first one I encountered I threw two fire bombs on, the next took 2 or so shotgun blasts.

And the Red9, yeah, it's better than the punisher for fighting enemies 1 on 1. I'm assuming the punisher rocks for fighting groups.. but that's what the shotty is for.

How could you possibly call that "easy" when all the other enemies I've faced to this point basically go down with ONE shotgun blow to the head??

SirTMagus
02-09-2005, 10:04 PM
I stuck with the Punisher the whole game so you shouldn't have any problems.

And you better get used to the chainsaw guys soon... :(

Kefka Jr.

Yeah, if you've already souped up the Punisher, just stick with that.

Too late. I ditched the Pun-Pun for the Red9. :lol

EDIT: Now I've ditched the Red9 for the Blacktail. This thing is sweet! How is any handgun possibly better than the Blacktail?

Armored
02-10-2005, 05:42 PM
I'm pretty sure the Red9 has the best stats.

SirTMagus
02-10-2005, 06:38 PM
Is the Blacktail the magnum...? That's different from a regular 'ol handgun.

highwind
02-10-2005, 06:51 PM
Blacktail has way better stats than the Red9.

It's just a baddass 9mm.

SirTMagus

I'm pretty sure these stats are correct.

BlackTail

The guns according to gamefaqs get past level 6, with the Red9 seriously outpowering the blacktail, but they're pretty equal power wise for most of the game. Then the blacktail takes up less storage which is cool, and can hold larger clips, but that's not a really useful function.

highwind
02-10-2005, 07:25 PM
I didn't know there were "exclusive" special upgrades past level 6.

You're right, Red9's "exclusive" is way more powerful than Blacktail's "exclusive"

Garr123

The stock with the red9 helped me save up rifle ammo for when i really needed it, it became pretty scarce when i was playing.

I heard the game adjusts difficulty depending on how often you die/heal/etc, is that true?

Armored
02-11-2005, 10:56 AM
No idea how to verify that. I couldn't find anything on capcoms site about it though.

SirTMagus
02-11-2005, 03:14 PM
Apparently, and this is what I heard, the more you die at a boss and use continues the more yellow herbs you'll find to increase your health. So the game feels SORRY for you. :(

...I guess that could explain why my life was maxed out by the middle of the game.
:\

BeeZee
02-11-2005, 03:17 PM
I beat the game my second time through without dying once, and I still found the exact same number of yellow herbs.

Draygone
02-12-2005, 12:33 AM
How did you control the guys in previous Resident Evils. Isn't it the same as what's here, except with a stationary camera?

(And where's the spoiler tag?)

BeeZee
02-12-2005, 12:54 AM
The movement control is more or less the same, but as someone else posted on the other forums, it's a lot more intuitive when the camera is always behind you. The shooting controls are improved to allow you to aim wherever you want to, as opposed to just straight ahead, up, or down. Coupled with the addition of damage zones on the enemies, this makes a huge difference in the combat.

Armored
02-13-2005, 04:55 PM
Well I finally beat it. 18 hours 40 minutes, like 500 enemies killed and 84 deaths, oh the spectacular dying.

I have one big comlaint, and that's with the total suckage of a few bosses later on in the game.

*SPOILERS*

Salazar was a complete joke. I found a spot to stand where he couldn't even hit me, all I had to do was L+R dodge an attack everyonce and a while.

Saddler was also pathetic. A few stabs to the eye and one rocket blast. I don't think he even hit me, bleh.

Fighting krauser multiple times was fun. The knife fight in which he killed me like 6 times was really cool, although a hassle. The fight in the Ruins area was cool but he was still too easy. Just shoot him in the feet when he has his shield up and he'll trip, then blast him in the face.

The "Alien" bodyguard of Salazar was intense. When the fight first started I tried doing stuff with the nitrogen but I couldn't shoot it or move it or anything. I ran around dodging him for the full 4 minutes while the elevator was coming. In the last 30 seconds it let me knock over the nitrogen and froze him, I just ran into the elevator instead of trying to kill him at that point.

IT was another intense part. After I dropped all the sections and got to fight him, the rocket launcher I had came in quite handy. 1 shot from that and one shotgun blast took him down. I wonder if you can kill him inside the crate area?

The masochist El Gigante were pretty cool. After I dropped the first one into the pit I just took the other out with a rocket.. that weapon is way too easy to afford for how awesome it is, you get too much money in the game. Whenever I ran into something tough I would buy a rocket launcher and that would solve everything. Two blind claw guys in the same room? Rocket!

Overall the story of the game seems kind of pointless. The only reason for the parasites and the Illuminados ultimately was to further Umbrella's expiriments? In that case the main game is basically a sidestory of Assignment Ada :p Blah blah presidents daughter, and other Leon filler.

*SPOILER END*

Still this definately goes in my list of favorite games among Soul Reaver, Fatal Frame and Valkyrie Profile.

I really wish they get their **** together with the story. They got a stable of memorable characters and just about FIVE MILLION loose threads and they're just sitting on them. WTF?!

The way I see it, RE4 is the new chapter of the series, kinda like a reboot. Everything's gonna start FRESH. ...Funny, I can't think of any analogies. The first thing that comes to mind is Star Trek IV... what the hell...?!

I think I suck, too.

I just got to the first Iron Maiden.

EDIT/SPOILERS:

Okay, now I beat it. That was fun. The bosses that should have been the hardest were stupid easy (Salazar and Saddler). The most enjoyable bosses to me were Salazar's Right Hand and Krauser.

During the Right Hand (did he have a name?) fight, I didn't realize you could tip the nitrogen to freeze and kill him. The feeling of defenselessness was a rush. I just kept running and dodging until the door opened/elevator activated.

Krauser was just fun. I even enjoyed the cutscene where you first meet him and you have to keep hitting the button combinations to stay alive. I think that would've been cooler if there were more than two combinations, but it was sweet none-the-less. I used the Broken Butterfly and the knife against him in the actual boss fight. He went down (in the end part) within a minute.

Vanilla Iced Tea

The only part I really ran straight through was the last lab area. When like... Six shield-holders, two armored guys, and a few regular schmucks flood the place. I got annoyed, so I grabbed the massive amount of items in the lab, shot a bunch of knees, and ran to the exit. If you got all the ammo/herbs in the room where you get the fourth Las Plagas, you should have enough to easily off the boss.

Bella sisters - NINE continues. C'mon Leon, you should be able to survive a chainsaw attack better than that!

The cabin standoff with Luis - 7 continues; because I didn't find out until afterwards that flash grenades were useful on the Whip Plagas.

Knife fight with Krauser - 6 continues; because I am terrible at dodge prompt reactions.
