    Game Data Horror Stories

I've had a bunch, but these were the worst:

    - The first time I played through Phantasy Star IV, I was right outside the final dungeon before I saved one night. When I got off of work the next day I went to resume it (I was thinking about playing all day, too). When I loaded the cart up, my data was just GONE. I still to this day don't know what the **** happened with that one, but it sucked a douche bag.

    - I got halfway through the 2nd book in Shining Force CD, and somehow my data became corrupt. That was actually the second time that had happened, too, though the first time wasn't so bad. Now I'm almost through with the 2nd book. Wish me luck...I REALLY would like to see the last 2 books finally after 15 years.

    - In Gladius, I had just gotten the skill 'Hell's Gate' for 6 of my characters. For those who don't know, that skill is a flaming ***** to get. If anybody dies in that battle, they're gone from the game forever, and it's HARD. I'd also gotten everybody up to level 26, which is really hard to do in that game. Right after I had done all of that I saved, and now my data won't load, and I have no idea why. I don't think it's corrupted, because the system still sees it and tries to load it just fine. SUCK.

And finally, my all-time WORST woeful tale of data horror:

    - After having to restart Shining Force III scenario 1 about 3 times, I finally had a final game data to load into scenario 2 (each one is a complete game). I finished scenario 2, and loaded that data into the third scenario, played all the way through that, and then spent about a week solid training up all of my characters in the final chapter of scenario 3...

...and then my backup RAM cart crashed. I lost it all. Along with it went my Albert Odyssey data, my Dragon Force data, and ALL of my game saves going back to 1995. 'Devastated' was not the word. That one STILL hurts.

TELL ME OF YOUR DREADFUL EXPERIENCES AND MAKE ME FEEL BETTER.

My Shining Force 1 battery died, so it couldn't keep a save for but a few days. I was crestfallen.

It appears Shining Force ruined a lot of people's lives.

I was at the end of Final Fantasy X, mopping up all of the sidequests and customizing my own über armor. Well, I did all of that, and was working on completing the Arena, when my friend came over to spend the night.

When I woke up he was playing his own file from his own memory card that he brought. He had his card in Slot 2, and left mine in Slot 1. Of course, when I was still asleep, he saved OVER my file... since the game didn't remember which file was saved/loaded last. He just did the thing that probably everybody does, move cursor to save, press a lot, done.

I ended up starting over from the beginning and doing it all again. I actually didn't mind all that much.

I'm glad FFXII remembers saves and loads, otherwise I'd have saved over the wrong file about a hundred times by now.

I've been a perpetrator more than I've been a victim. I saved over Magus' FFX file, and my little brother's Legend of Mana file.

Hahaha... I did that to my buddy. I felt like a douche. It's a good thing my file was way better then his.

                Re: Game Data Horror Stories

Back in 4th grade I was playing a lot of legend of zelda. My dad invited two of his friends over, and their kids were messing with our NES games. I had to go eat dinner, and I told them several times how to play zelda without screwing up the saves (hold reset then hit power).

An hour later, my super awesome final dungeon save was gone, and I was livid. I remember getting in trouble and being sent to my room for repeatedly referring to those kids as "stupid idiots" after they'd left. I think two of them were my age or older, so I felt it was justified.

When my original Dreamcast died, it corrupted my best PSO save with my level 116 ramar, along with whatever else was on the VMU.

OH. When I started up the Saturn a few months ago, my all A-rank NiGHTS file was gone.

How ****ing OFTEN am I supposed to REPLACE that BATTERY?

I forgot to list that one, but that happened to me too...only it was my own damn fault. I got confused as to which VMU was in right then, and I deleted my own file. I was about that same level, too. I was livid.

I've had mine for about 12 years, and I've had to replace it once. Honestly though, I ignored the fact that the battery was dying for a long time, and just used the backup RAM instead, so there's no telling how many batteries I might have gone through in that time.

[EDIT] And I've saved over other people's data too. You're sitting there watching the progress bar and suddenly you realize.

                      Re: Game Data Horror Stories

I've never lost Shining Force data, on any of the Genesis, Game Gear, or Saturn games, but my brother's file just randomly disappeared on Shining Force II once. It was so bizarre, because the old witch lady came up immediately when I turned it on instead of going through the SEGA logo and the start screens, and said something to the effect of "WHOOPS! File 2 is gone!" and proceeded on as normal. Wackiest circumstance I've ever seen from a game, and to this day, my brother still doesn't believe me that I didn't just delete his file in a fit of rage.

I overwrote someone else's FFX save file that was up to the last dungeon, Yuna's sphere grid completely maxed out, most of the arena finished, most of the ultimate weapons found and customized, all the aeons, almost all the sidequests finished. Well over a hundred hours logged in the game and I just accidentally overwrote it with my 50-hour file. =( I went through and did a whole bunch of sidequests for him and grinded out a lot of the monster killings you have to do for the arena before I was satisfied. Luckily we had named our main characters the same thing, seeing as how both our names are Rick.

My Dex drive either doesn't work or all my old files are corrupted because everything that wasn't on a physical PSone memory card is now gone, including most of my RPG saves.

i'm surprised no one has mentioned a xenogears story.

3 times my save corrupted before fighting miang. a bunch of my friends also had the same problem with different versions of the game.

A few days ago I lost pretty much all of my game data except RPGM stuff. The entire card became corrupted. Valk says it's because I deleted a game with Soul Calibur 3 data on the card. I nearly took the baseball bat aproach. Luckly I was able to reformat it with my max drive.

                              Edit:

Yeah, it sucks watching the stupid bar slowly reach complete. You close your eyes and pray that didn't happen. I acidently saved over my first RPG Maker game. Those save bars take so long it's hell. My heart basically sank. In desperation I shut the PS2 off mid save. Of course it corrupted.
