The big Chicago rain flood thingy. Yeah, i was a victim. Totaled out for $12,400. What should I get? If I get new GM, I get employee discount and I have $3,500 in GM points (dunno how many they'll let me use). What's the most fuel efficient GM car that won't kill me, or should I go for something else used? Used is such a gamble though...

Might I recommend getting a car that uses diesel fuel?Originally posted by Kire View PostThe big Chicago rain flood thingy. Yeah, i was a victim. Totaled out for $12,400. What should I get? I use a tank of gas every month to 6 weeks.

There are actually cars that run on diesel?"Mindless killing doesn't do a lot for me anymore." - Sampson

In the case that you can pocket any of the difference:Originally posted by Kire View PostTotaled out for $12,400. What should I get?
1) Get a bicycle
2) Get a old diesel Chevrolet LUV pickup truck(late 1970s/early 1980s) or VW Rabbit diesel or any small diesel econobox from the same era; modify what you purchase to run on vegetable oil and do it. If diesel doesn't appeal to you, find a Honda CRX HF, Geo Metro, ect.
3) Take the difference and put it into gold and silver, don't keep it in a safe deposit box, only accept the physical commodity and not a slip of paper, and don't have anything on record in case the government wants to confiscate it in the near future
If you can't pocket any of the difference:
1) Look for a used diesel VW Jetta in good shape. If diesel doesn't appeal to you, find a Honda CRX HF, Geo Metro, ect.
2) Get a bicycle
Avoid GM, and most other 'American' brands from the past 15 years. Their cars are maintenance whores. The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson

Re: My car is totaled.
GM/Ford/Dodge trucks from the early 1990s and before were decent, some of them even really good(albeit most were gas hogs, they were at least low maintenance relative to other vehicles). But their cars from the middle 1970s onward... eeewwwww...Last edited by The Toecutter; 09-23-2008, 08:04 PM.The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson

Re: My car is totaled.
Probably not immediately, but it will be coming. By 2018, all of our taxes will end up servicing the interest of the national debt if current trends continue and there will remain nothing left for anything else, as it will simply be a mathematical impossibility. This is completely unsustainable and collapse is now unavoidable. We'll probably see financial collapse before then, and the chance of it being this year is present, as a small collapse has already occured; time will tell whether this small collapse will have no relief period and just so happens to be the beginning of something much larger and dangerous than the Wall Street bufoons are cowaring over at this time.Originally posted by SirTMagus View PostSo we're gonna live horrible Mad Max/Children of Men/V for Vendetta lives from here on.
Get a car that doesn't require the use of a petroleum-based fuel, or alternatively, a bicycle. Otherwise, you're going to be walking in the not too distant future, or most optimistically, paying far more than you can afford for transportation.Anymore advice?
Efficiency, efficiency, efficiency. Especially if you want to spend less money.
My former friend took out a loan for a Chevrolet Impala early this year. It will not surprise me if he can't afford to fuel it before he ever pays it off.
