Online gaming faux pas re:female characters

So, when I used to play PSO, it was never a big deal that my entire stable of characters was female. And I know we've had a discussion in another thread a while ago about the preference some of us have for using female characters.

But for some reason, whenever I play Rock Band online with someone for the first time, I ALWAYS get some sort of reaction to the fact that I'm using Miss Modular, a female character, to represent myself.

I really do not play games online all that often, but I'm guessing it's perfectly acceptable to play something like FFXI or Soul Calibur using a female character. In Rock Band, though, it seems as if it's not quite as accepted.

I mean, really, what's the difference? You are using a character as your avatar, something that represents you in either case. Is it because one is fantasy, and the other is supposed to be "realistic?"

I dunno. I just like looking at a cutie female on the screen, moreso than some guy. Did I commit some sort of faux pas, or break some unwritten code of conduct?

Well, there's that, plus I sorta like getting Miss Modular new outfits, and changing them out every so often before a gig. Right now, in fact, she's dressed kinda like a noir gumshoe, with the fedora, dark suit and all.

I normally play as guys if given the option but have no qualms with playing as a female. When it comes to fighting games though I usually go with guys since they normally favor power over speed and I happen to favor power over speed.

No one ever questioned if I was a guy when I was a Galka (they
are all male), despite some female players in my all-Galka linkshell.

There is a big conflict when using a female character. I use a female character on Monster Hunter and people ask me why I use a female character. I reply "I like sexy girls holding huge swords." Really if I'm going to spend my hours seeing a character's back running around might as well be a sexy female.

Also using a female has its advantages. All those female players hunters think you are a girl and treat you as a princcess. I remember I used to wait for an hour for a party on FFXI while the mithra got instant invites without even asking.

In Rock Band I guess it is how you explained. Fantasy games are more like roleplaying for me but games like rock band are more like representing the player. You wouldn't want a female singing as a man? lol. In the end its up to you. Do not let people decide what you use. Play as you want to playand have fun. If you like it then there is no reason for you to stop because of others. It is your game and your life. Do with it as you please.

It is more likely for antisocial lonely fantasy mmorpg losers to play girl characters so it is less taboo.

It is less likely for guitar hero teenager losers to play girl characters and plus they are all teenagers so anything different is taboo and people will give you a hard time.

When I was single and lonely I made an all lesbian hot girl house in The Sims and played Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball too... It's okay, it's okay.

What kind of things do they say to you when you play as Miss Modular?

Anyways this proves that we are still living in a sexist country and Generation Y isn't any different.

I just kind of like to rip on guys that play as girls on MMO's. I don't have a big deal with it though.

When it comes to other genre's like fighting games I don't think it even matters. Cassandra is my favorite fighter in SCIV.

Same goes for games like the Resident Evils. I always played as Claire or Jill the vast majority of the time growing up playing the RE games.

I usually just make guy and girl characters.

Mainly start making a guy first to help represent myself, then I tend to make a girl afterwards for fun.

How so? 'cause a guy wants to be a girl?

There's differences in the Resident Evils though, depending on the character. That's not really a valid comparison.

My main in WoW is a female troll rogue. I have all male alts, though. In FFXII, whenever possible, I used Ashe as my party leader. However, I play only males in D&D campaigns and males in Rock Band / Guitar Hero type of games. Irish Daigle's a rockstar.

Nobody's ever questioned my choices while playing games and choosing females. Except when I pick women in fighting games, but inverse to Rintintin I happen to favor speed over power in that type of game. I used Hwoarang in Tekken a lot because of this, because he was fast, but I also used Xiaoyu just as often for the same reason, but I received a ton of flak for the latter simply for her being a girl.

I dunno. In WoW, I feel like I do play as the character, but it doesn't bother me, even when I'm forced into acting like a girl because I'm on an RP server. But in any other capacity where I play as a character, filling all the responses with me instead of the character being a set thing, I feel fairly uncomfortable in the role of a woman.

In short, Perv, I think you have issues. =D

                              Jill = regular game
