What’s your all-time favorite video game?

Choose a game, and then go into some detail about why it's favorite.

Note: The reasion why this isn't in "Let's talk about video games" is because that topic is just general discussion about video games. It's not one focused topic about a certain aspect of them.

Mine has to be The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That game was so revolutionary for me at the time. I remember when I first rented it. I was young, maybe about ten. I didn’t care about graphics, sound, or anything else in those days. However, and for some unknown reason, I could tell that there was something different about this game. I didn’t know what it was, but there was just something about it. As I watched the first in-game cut-scene, I knew I was in for something special. Exploring Kokiri Forest for the first time captivated me, and I was pretty proud of myself after crawling through that small hole and then finding the Kokiri Sword. After acquiring the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield so Mido would let me pass, I entered the first dungeon—the Great Deku Tree. Once again, I was in awe and wonder at everything. Never before had I experienced anything like this. I progressed pretty far in the dungeon, all the way down to the lower level. Then I got stuck and didn’t know what to do. That’s when I asked my older brother to help me the next day. He came to the rescue (as usual when I couldn’t figure a game out) and got me past that part and then ended up finishing the rest of the dungeon because I couldn’t do it. Actually, he ended up taking over and playing a lot of the game for me because it was “too hard and I couldn’t do it”. That’s what I would usually say each time a game was too hard for me to play. Veeeerrrry long story short, the whole game just blew me away, especially The Temple of Time. Seeing Link transform into his adult form was an absolute shock. It still impresses me to this day. Not only was that a major twist in the story, but it also brought significant gameplay changes too. Seeing familiar locations totally changed after Link’s seven years absence was awesome. Not only that, but most of the equipment obtained when Link was a child were no longer usable in his adult form. That was another welcome surprise. It kept me wondering what new, and better equipment Link would find as replacements. I really love Ocarina of Time, but there are just too many things for me to list about this game without this post dragging more than it already is. From the very beginning, to all the way to the touching ending, this game has been a memorable experience for me and one I’ll never forget.

Resident Evil 4, mainly because of it's pure awesomeness. Game still looks amazing today, enemy A.I. was nuts, game had perfect pacing, next to no back tracking, every single boss fight can compare to any final boss in any videogame, and there were many bosses, not to mention all the cool ass monsters in the game.

To me it's closely followed by Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid 4, Dragon Quest VIII and Bioshock.

Starcraft, it is simply the most fun I've ever had playing a video game. That is why it is my favorite game.

Super Mario Bros. Like a lot of people it was the first video game that we had in our house. And I probably spent just as much time playing it after we had other games. I never ever got tired of it. The warp zones gave you multiple paths to finish the game. You could give yourself all kinds of challenges like finishing a world without using powerups or always facing Bowser with regular Mario. It was pure, uncompromised fun.

Runner up, I think I'd go with the new Prince of Persia trilogy. To me they were more of an environmental puzzle game than an action/adventure. The combat and story took a backseat to the level design which was pitch perfect. Once you knew what the prince could do, you could always figure out how to progress. You see a switch you have to hit and just take a few minutes to look at the room you can see exactly where you have to jump, run, flip to reach it. But pulling it off wasn't so easy which would have been maddening if it wasn't for the Sands of Time. Being able to rewind meant you weren't punished for trial and error and when you screwed up a jump you could retry it IMMEDIATELY instead of reloading and working your way back from the last save point.

          Quest for Glory 4.

The others were great too but that was my favorite of the five.

I think it may be Silent Hill 2 for me. I'll leave it to Patryn or someone to write the essay on why.

I don't even know how to answer this question and I never do because every game is flawed in some way and there's no clear cut answer about what game you hold above all others for the rest of eternity and if you were stuck on a desert island and could only play this what would it be!

I'll just rate my favorite game in terms of the number of replays in which case it's Ultima IV or The Magic Candle (I know, I have two I cheat). It was pretty much the TOP TIER of RPGs when it came out. At the time, every RPG (both western and Japanese) was based around a simple plot outline which served as an excuse for a band of adventurers to stomp around and slay monsters until you reached the bottom of the dungeon.

Ultima IV was the complete opposite. In order to beat the game you had to become a living embodiment of good by sparing lives, giving money to the poor, and acquiring artifacts of power. This approach was inconceivable at the time especially considering prior Ultima games rewarded you for slaughtering innocents and stealing ****.

The Magic Candle was one of the first non-linear RPGs in that your goal wasn't to defeat an almighty boss but to keep him from returning to the world. Almost 10 years before the rise of Bioware and Black Isle, The Magic Candle rewarded you for talking with NPCs and exploring the world rather than killing every moving thing.

Ultimately I say Ultima IV is number 1 but TMC is a close runner up (with Betrayal at Krondor coming in 3rd).

Zombies Ate My Neighbors. It's perfection and I love it's theme.

                        Tetris.

As much as I'd really like to think other games (from different genres in particular) come close to it; I really don't believe they do.
It has the sort of appeal other games simply don't have. People who don't even normally like video games can enjoy it, whether they've been playing it for 20 years or just started it up for the first time.
While there's tons of video games with puzzles that require quick thinking to solve, few of them are really that difficult to play through again after you've done it once. Even fewer of those are something you'd ever actually want to pick up again after beating it once.
Tetris of course avoids this by being impossible to actually "win", which ends up being a big part of why it's so fun.

Saying Tetris is your all-time favorite game is like saying that Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is your all-time favorite album.

I hate to be unoriginal, but I'm going to say Earthbound.

I dun feel like answering this in detail since we do it so often, but if I HAD to choose a game that was my absolute favorite, my current feeling is that Grandia II takes it.

I sorta shift between it and Shining Force II, but SFII is pure nostalgia in a fun-coated package versus Grandia II being a forgettable but impeccably well-done and adorable story in a fun-coated package.
