    1st project (story ideas)

I noticed a few other threads where people had posted their current projects, and the feedback you guys had given really helped them out. I was hoping to pull on some of that community creative juice if that's ok.

Usually I make up a story as I go along (not sure why, it's just how I work), so I guess I'd like to see if I could get feeback on what I'm currently doing.

    ------------The Story-------------

The game starts and there is an intro that gives you background information. The gyst of it is there are 4 elemental guardians (Gaia - Earth, Tempest - Water, haven't thought of the other two, Ra is a filler name for the Fire atm), and their mortal enemies, an army of dragons (whose soul purpose is causing destruction and burning everything to ashes), have resurfaced from being sealed away. The Guardians wage war, many mortals die, and the Guardians finally slay the Dragon's King Azaroth. The Guardian Gaia, on his deathbed, becomes a land mass and seals Azaroth's remains inside himself. The other guardians are presumed dead as well. The game itself jumps in 1,000 years later, at which time the Guardians, and dragons are believed mere myths and bedtime stories.

After the intro the game starts with you taking control of the main character Fading (yup, named him after me lol) as he wakes up in his home. The village he was born in (Gaian, named after their Island), is a pretty dull. So he tells his mom he's going to head down to the local Port to watch the incoming ships (hoping something exciting comes in), and see his Dad who works at the docks. Along the way various characters, and a signpost on the world map warn you of a dangerous Cave to the south. Upon getting to the port and finding your father, you learn from him that a lone woman has ventured alone to the caves.

You, decide you can't leave her alone (partially from wanting adventure, and partially from being a good guy), so you go too. Upon finding her in the caves she attacks you thinking your one of the minions of what she's hunting. After beating her she tells you she's a dragon slayer, you mock her a bit saying Dragon's are myth. You agree to go a bit further, but feel it's dangerous and should leave soon. Getting in the next room you find magic seals with a statue in the center (How I'd love to be able to put a Dragon there instead). It turns out a group of miners had broken one of the seals surrounding Azaroth's corpse. You fight him, and after the fight it's commented that he's getting stronger as the fight goes on. After the fight the room shakes, loud sounds que, and you black out.

You wake up in another cave, after stepping outside to get your bearings you find out your not even on the same island anymore. You venture to a nearby town and find out it's a town with the sole purpose of training women in healing magics.

    ----------Group Dynamics-----------

Now I plan for you to meet the 3rd party member, an innocent acting support type char, Talia, soon after that when you meet up with her in a nearby tower where she's taking a test. She'll be the group healer.

As for the group dynamics I have Fading as the typical cool guy, yet oblivious when it comes to girls (tho he def shows interest). Amelia is from a dragon slaying clan and very formal. She constantly takes swipes at Fading, typically calling him childish and questioning his manliness. Talia will balance it out as peace maker, but have a slight crush on Fading which makes Amelia a bit jealous. Amelia and Fading have constant arguments at first, and want to part ways, but after seeing the all girl town and deciding saying Fading is the biggest threat to peace on the Island she sticks around until they find a boat. I also plan on adding a goofy, and slightly crazy mage to the group.

So far I've added in some side quests, and tried to add in a decent amount of humor inbetween Fading and Amelia as they constantly argue. Case in point, they start arguing and make a woman cry as she got drawn into the conversation and got confused about what was going on.

I'm kind of busy at the moment, but I'll check all of this out more carefully in a little while.

One thing though, EDIT your original post if you want to add something, rather than posting 3-4 times in a row.

You didn't have to edit your last post, as it was after mine. It's ok though, thanks for your attention to the problem.

I like the story so far! I like how Gaia becomes a land mass, which seals Azaroth. It reminds me a lot of some actual ancient myths, and the fact that it actually happened that way in your story is cool. I also like the setup, which leaves just enough unanswered to be intriguing.

The 'evil sealed away' idea is a little bit trite, but you can salvage that if you're creative with the story.

Well it sounds pretty good so far. Keep it up!

Thanks, I do agree about the evil being sealed deal. In fact I've cut a few other things for being a bit generic. Sometimes it's hard not to follow some of the basics, even tho you know you've been there done that 1000x before.

Just wanted to say I'm really getting into this version of RPG Maker. Once you work around the limits it's pretty good. I'm about 35% into using up the resources on my first game. It also is kinda tough to balance the xp monsters give, and atk and def so monsters don't get too weak to fast, but it's working so far.

Currently finished the second Island, now I get to mess with making a really big town heh.

I also was surprised how well you can do cutscenes. I had a character join, and die in the same dungeon, and the music mixed with the words and everyones portrait's made it have more emotion than I thought it would.

Pretty much done. Story, events, monsters, items, and skills, etc, all finished. Right now I'm playtesting (midway thru at 9 hours), and I'm honestly very happy with how it's turning out. Despite it's limitations, you can make a really good RPG with this. There were a few things I worried about when entering the commands, but they worked perfect.

I'm glad I'm playtesting tho. I've alrdy found a few missing variables, wrong character saying the wrong thing, spelling errors, and it's also helping me tweak my monsters and leveling. Right now everything is in perfect order so you don't lvl twice and monsters do 0 dmg or something. I spent a few days just on trying to figure out how to balance things right lol.

Also happy with how a few dramatic scenes turned out using a mixture of screen flashing, characters talking, and sound effects mixed with music changing.

When done I'll put it on my PSP memory stick and put it on my computer. Not sure where to upload it to tho.

Edit - I hit 99% and had to cut stuff tho.

It kinda reminds me of how zelda orcarina of time how the land and things were created by elements, but ya I do the same thing where ya think as you go.
I too like how it is based a little off of greek gods and mythologies. I think the bosses could be like devil versons of the gods and you could learn about them at libraries as well as made up tales.

wait should I just buy a psp memory stick then instead of a max drive cause the maxdrives are all sold out ya know? Do they do the same thing?

Well I have a PS3, not sure if it works the same with PS2 as I haven't tried it. The PS3 it has a virtual memory card deal, so I can just push triangle on the save and copy it to the memory stick, and then link my psp to my comp and xfer it over. I'm not sure if you have a PS2 or PS3, so couldn't tell you the best route. If you have a PS3 tho, then it's a very easy way to xfer PS1 and PS2 save games.

                        Re: 1st project (story ideas)

This is a fine story and you described it well.

It's definitely cliched (ancient war 1,000 years ago, dragons that no one thinks exist, magic seals, evil being sealed away, bold and adventurous male lead who's oblivious to girls, innocent healer acting as peacemaker...). That's not a good thing...

...But I don't think it's a dealbreaker either. I like the way the events transpire in the first arc, I already like the three main characters you've described (not enough yet about the mage), and Obi is right--it's pretty damn cool that an ancient guardian turned himself into a landmass.

As far as names for the guardians, possibly Sol for fire? And, to steal from Persona 3, Fortuna for wind?

Watch your spelling and grammar. "Gyst" should be "gist," I think you meant "cue" not "que," it's "sole purpose" not "soul purpose," "your" in the third paragraph should be "you're," and "Dragon's" should not have an apostrophe, and there are a couple of weird comma splices throughout. Please don't think I'm picking on you--I just want to point out that you need to be careful with this kind of stuff in your game, because it's easy to make mistakes when your mind is on other parts of your game, and it can make it look a little messy to the player or even break the flow of good dialogue.

Anything interesting about the gameplay that you would like to share?

It's cool you're in playtesting already, it sounds like this is a long way along, and I'm looking forward to its release.

I also think its cool you added your name in it. In my game the strongest weapons are named after me.

Ya, sometimes I type faster than I think lol.

As far as gameplay, I've tried to experiment. I took the idea from Wildarms and made a dungeon where you play one character at a time and they each have their own trial and story. By the end I was happy with it as it felt as if the characters had truely learned something. I also added in things like the main character going off on his own, almost dying, and then it switches to the two other characters who are looking for him.

I also changed my mind and made the hyperactive mage a hyperactive ninja from the same clan as Amelia....a funny, off his rocker ninja heh.

This the the order of the game, Gaia Islan - Valleria Island - Gaia Island - Sanctus Kingdom 2 (made two land masses connect by a warp point on the road so it's like one giant land mass) - Tempest Isle - Sanctus Kingdom 1 - Neverfrost.

I've also added in moves evolving into better moves after certain bosses. It weeds out the weaker moves, and makes it feel like a reward.

Thanks. Heh....I even gave my friends cameos. If anyone tries it ignore the house on the right when you first start the game .

To tell the truth it can get difficult to come up with new names for everything. You have roughly 4 sets of armor or so, and weapons to name. Towns, dungeons, characters. I tried to give most ppl their own personality, and almost everyone has two sets of dialogue.

One thing I forgot to mention above, I also added in a drinking scene using variables in a bar on Sanctus Island that worked surprisingly well. Everytime you drink it adds 1, and it gives you a different set of dialogue up to 4 diff times, and then resets. Couldn't resist adding in the main char slurring his speech and rambling on drunk.
