Oh god, show. Why must you taunt me with flashes that you could be great and then exalt in the flaws that made me pan you originally?
Thanks to my job, I got a chance to see Monday's season premiere early LEGALLY. Unfortunately, another reporter got the chance to do the review in the paper, so this is the only other place I can vent.
If you just watched the first 3/4, it's not half-bad. Then something happens that makes you just groan. The worst part is that it's clear that it's a scene designed to show how John is growing up and won't be the same whiny kid he was in the first season. The problem is that the nature of the act itself reinforces that John is just a child.
The sad thing is that the episode leading up to the decision actually did do some good work showing John maturing. I began thinking that perhaps the early interviews weren't full of ****. Then...
Oh, and be prepared for biblical allusions. Lots and lots of Biblical allusions.
Although, stick around for the end: there is a nice surprise right at the end that does point to some interesting directions the season can go.
So basically, Terminator is not as bad as I feared it would be after seeing the pilot. The series has promise, but it keeps squandering it. This second season premiere is basically the prototypical episode of the series in that regard.
2 out of 4 stars.
