    Codec help....

Ok, I for the life of me can't understand what codec or player I need to get fansubs to work on.

I got VLC, Windows Media Player, and Quicktime. But they won't play the video. The sound is there.

Now I had it working on my old computer, but I can't seem to figure out what I need to download to get it to work.

Since you didn't name DivX up there, I'll say it's that.

Just get Media Player Classic and it will work.

I think you also need something like Fddshow or something like that.

A lot of fansubs are done as MKVs now, Matroska Video. Good for dual audio / dual subtitles that you can interchange. If your fansubs are .mkv format, might wanna find the Matroska codec pack. If they're just avi or wmv or whatever, DivX should handle the problem. fddshow works too. Try them all. I have like half a dozen freaking codecs because they're all necessary for something or other.

          I hate the internets sometimes.

That's probably because you had the codecs you needed already. Once Von has the DivX codec, he should be able to run whatever he's watching on any of his other players.
He doesn't HAVE to run it with the DivX Player, he just needs the codec that comes with it.

Well that is the thing, I have divx on my computer, but it doesn't seem to want to run everything.

mkv files are terrible. they're pretty, but even with the right codecs, the compatability sucks.

if thats what you're trying to play, understand that there may actually be NOTHING you can do to get it to run.

Well I downloaded what Irish said, and it still does the same thing. I have played these before on my old computer, and they work just fine.

I don't see what the problem could be.

                  EDIT:

Ok, for what ever reason, I downloaded windows media classic, even though I already "thought" I had it on. Which I am sure I did. It came from one of those codec packs. I am guessing it wasn't the vista version. I now can play the videos. Thanks guys.
