    Tales of Vesperia....anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Is anyone besides me playing Tales of Vesperia?

It's a gorgeous game, and I mean GORGEOUS. I thought Dragon Quest VIII looked like animation; ToV puts DQVIII to shame.

Sure, the story so far is pretty standard 16-bit boilerplate. But you know what? I can live with that.

I've had a soft spot in my heart ever since I played Tales of Eternia (Tales of Destiny II in the US...I only call it Eternia because to confuse matters, in Japan they made their own Tales of Destiny II that was a direct sequel to Tales of Destiny, so I want to make clear exactly what game I played).

ANYWHO, Tales of Eternia was a great experience, and it's one of my favorite games ever.

I'll admit that Vesperia hasn't grabbed me in quite the same way (while I quite like Yuri, the main character, Estelle is annoying and Karol and Rita do at times scream stereotype. But they're likeable stereotypes), but I think that's because Eternia was really just telling a small tale about four characters, and I liked those four characters. Plus, Eternia pulled out a whole two world thing, a trick that's worked for me ever since Final Fantasy IV pulled it.

Oh, and the combat's fun, too. Although the bosses are about 100x harder than the regular fights.

I highly urge any 360 owner with Live download the demo. Give it a whirl. You may be surprised!

Does the main character look like a toy soldier?

    (I can't contribute)

    ANYWHO

I wish the Tales series wasn't so filled with anime stock characters.

You play one tales game you've played them all. I doubt this one will be any different other than a dog that smokes. I had fun with Symphonia. But it was hard because I really really hated the characters.
Find a dog, honk it's nose. If you are bothered by this sentence. I guess you're just not cool enough for the noses.

Yeah, pretty much if you've played one Tales game you've played them all.

And NO that does not apply to the Final Fantasy series.

              You jaded gamers.
Twothorp was in immense pain. The blisters did not care.

I might check out the demo. First and only Tales game I've experienced was Symphonia, only due to the dearth of RPGs on GC (and at the time, having only the original Xbox as my other then-current gen console (GBA does not count), and we all know how many "traditional" (read Japanese) RPGs were on THAT system), I picked it up when it was $20. Having had little information on it, and the series as a whole, I was let down due to the real time battles. I played it for about 10 hours, and lost interest. If I had known beforehand that it was not turn-based, maybe I'd have enjoyed it a bit more.

That being said, I think I'm gonna hold out for Valkyria Chronicles instead. Yeah, I know they're two different types of games, but that last just seems more my style.

I played Valkyria Chronicles at PAX. It's actually pretty fun if not horrendously ugly.

Tales of Vesperia on the other hand is the exact same game with prettier graphics.

Might play the game one day, but I'm not going to go out of my way. Maybe when I'm bored and browsing Gamestop and it is like around twenty bucks... maybe thirty. I enjoyed the hell out of Abyss, but honestly it was about the same thing with some different features and a nice polish. The combat moved smoothly, which was nice. However, I don't care enough to buy the same game again with a different name.

EDIT: Oh, this is for the 360 isn't it? Guess it is a non-issue then.

All Tales of games are terrible.

Tales of the Abysis was great I thought.

I really want to play the game, but I still don't have my 360 yet.

The tutorial level was really bland and ugly with repetitive textures and robotic animation that's reminiscent of Morrowind (yes, MORROWIND).

The game itself is good. You take turns moving characters in real time and setting their line of sight and position. Moving into an enemies line of sight might trigger a counterattack or readied action. The tutorial was pretty simple but I can imagine this game getting hectic with tanks and stuff rolling around in a city landscape.

I'm 20 hours in and loving it. I retract some of my criticism with the story. It's done a few things that surprised me and probed some very interesting moral questions in a very cool way.

Still mostly love the characters (Estelle and Rita can still be annoying at times). I love that there's a whole ****ing (sorta) subplot that unfolds just in the victory animation screens that's all about high-fives. It's hilarious.

That's another thing: The game can be funny. It's made me laugh out loud quite a few times.

I'm really, really loving it and hating my roommates for taking the TV up because otherwise I'd be playing it right now.
