Dispite my efforts, I still haven't a job yet. It doesn't help when every online aplication wants your social security number, either. Because of this I haven't filled out any online aplications. If I would put all zeros in that section, would the aplication still be valid?

Re: Online aplications
No.
They need your SS# for tax documentation purposes. Once they find out it's a fake you're liable to get fired.
If you don't want to apply online, then just go to the store and ask for piece of paper.

I don't like online applications because of the extensive 50 question bull**** quiz they tack on to them....and that's why.

Re: Online aplications
What's both scary and amusing is that the Social Security number isn't intended to be given out to private entities and technically it is in fact illegal for a private corporation to demand it, but thanks to Reagan, all employers are required to obtain it; either way, they're technically breaking the law.
This number has become a de-facto national ID card. The unnecessary felling of a tree, perhaps the growth of centuries, seems to me a crime little short of murder." ~ Thomas Jefferson

Re: Online aplications
Why wouldn't you? Would you give out your credit card number to verify you're over 18? Seriously though, people can do some real damage with your social security number, and since it's not always easy to verify the security of a site, especially since most companies use third parties, I think I can see why people would have a problem giving it out. Can we get the social security number of the supervisor/person interviewing us, so we can do a check on themOriginally posted by goldgecko4 View PostWhy would you have a problem giving out your Social?
.
Some information should be able to be kept private, we all know how private our phone numbers and addresses are kept by companies *sigh*. Not that I disagree with credit checks on job applicants (though not sure I fully agree with it either), but I think you should be able to keep things like that private. I don't think it's that much of a request to make to not have to give your social.Last edited by thetruecoolness; 08-30-2008, 10:35 PM.

Re: Online aplications
Are you assuming that the damage done to you will be by the company? By some rogue employee? The odds of someone stealing your identity through a job application is akin to walking outside and getting hit by lightening. And if you're worried that you'll be made part of the "system", sorry, you are. What's one more or less organization having your social going to matter?

Re: Online aplications
I have gotten 5 jobs through applications online, and they have all paid me ludicrous amounts of money.
Also Denethor is lying all you have to do is put all 5s when it asks for your social this is the number for "john doe" and also demonstrates intelligence to the company on your part

Re: Online aplications
I agree with thetruecoolness. I just don't feel like I should give out my social number to a job that might not even hire me. But asking again, would my application still be considered valid if I would put all 0s in that section? I figure if I get an interview, and possibly get the job, I could just give them my real number.Twothorp was in immense pain. The blisters did not care.

Re: Online aplications
why are you even applying online? just go to the place and give your app or follow whatever instructions they want for applying. if you dont like what they ask of you then skip them and apply elsewhere.
i wouldnt give my credit card number out to verify my age but id certainly be happy to present my driving license to authenticate myself. identity theft is rampant, though i dont think it warrants withholding every piece of personal information.
