User-Generated Content and its bearing on future RPGMs

I picked up Blast Works for the Wii a bit ago (before the $20 price drop ), and just picked up Bangai-O Spirits today. In conjunction with the forthcoming release of LittleBigPlanet, it seems as if console (and handheld) user-generated content is just beginning to flourish, and I can only envision more of it in the future. Granted, mods for PC games have existed for quite some time, but this seems to be a fairly new phenomenon for consoles, and if LBP indeed lives up to the hype, with the community-building aspects and all, we might see quite a few more games being released with this aspect in the forefront of developers' consciousness when creating a game.

Yeah, I'm not mentioning Halo's Forge or GH:WT's ability to create songs, because it does not really have a bearing on the question at hand.

The question, then, is, if and when the next console RPGM is released, and if this user-generated content thing really picks up steam (and everything I've read says that's the next big thing for console games), what impact do you think it may or may not have on the RPGM community?

Will we get a sudden influx of new members? Will it go largely ignored by the mainstream as it has in the past? Will we see a renaissance or a "second (or third, or fourth, depending on how you view the history of the community) golden age" of RPGM games being created? Will it become a lot bigger (meaning, a lot more popular) than it currently is, and will that put a strain on our fairly tight-knit community? Will numerous other RPGM sites pop up in its wake?

Or is this all speculation and conjecture? Discuss if you deem it necessary to do so.

I really wanted to try Blast Works because of the transfer system it had where you could just trransfer your ship or whatever directly onto a website.

Honestly, that would be the best way of doing RPGM instead of having to spend around $80 (the game+3rd party software+hardware to transfer) just to get the full effect.

However Enterbrain hates the Console RPGM community sooo...

I'd be really excited if Enterbrain decided to make another RPG Maker. As for it having an impact on the Pavilion, yeah I think it would, even if you could upload games directly to a special website other than the Pavilion (or something). I'm sure it would bring new people here, but probably not as many as you might think.

RPGM3's announcement brought about 1200 registered members here in one year.

and added about 20,000 people who just browsed the site and forum.

I did not know this. But all in all, how many of those people stayed? Probably not many.

              That sounds promising.

I enjoy being able to make user content on a game. I've tinkered around with it on a few PC games, and that was one of the big attractions of those games. PC gaming can get depressingly expensive though, which makes this stuff on a console great. What is really needed is for user content on platforms on the 360 or PS3 to really shine is for the engine to really overcome some of the older limitations of consoles. I use the first RPGM, but when I think of just how much more I can do with something like say Neverwinter Nights, it's depressing.

the registered members typically drop off as they lose interest in the software. we're used to it. but as long as some stay, we're good.

also, our registered user count would be much higher (2158, I think) if I didnt delete low post-count accounts that have been inactive for a year and I dont think will be returning.

very few registered members actually download the games submitted here. they're mostly downloaded by lurkers.

Well, for what it's worth, I'm glad this place is here. This forum isn't perfect, but it's better than agetec.yuku. At least this place isn't dead.

Back on topic. Too bad Enterbrain didn't have something announced on the next RPG Maker, or this topic would be much more vaild. Nonetheless, we can't let the hope die.

Why? You think they might say something about it in the upcoming Tokyo Game Show?

I dont know if they'll do it at TGS.

EDIT: it's not like enterbrain has been completely silent about their next RPGM installment. they've already confirmed XNA support in an interview.
