What is this game I'm thinking of.

I think it was for NES. Possibly the Master System, though. I have cloudy childhood memories of the game.

I don't even recall if it's fun or anything--it just bugs me that I can't find it/remember it.

You started out in like a forest, with a big tree or something like that. You had a few different characters you could choose from then you started out and I remember having to go left and down a ladder and then you entered a sort of dungeon. I remember the game was mostly about exploring this dungeon.

I also remember it being very difficult, and not knowing what to do because I was really little at the time.

It's pretty reviled for being super hard and obtuse. Back when Gamestop sold NES games I often saw if for, like, a buck fifty. MAYBE.

It's actually pretty fun if you know what you're doing, and unless my memories have lied to me, it's got a great sense of atmosphere.

Pro Tip: Did you know that it's part of a long running series that also includes Faxanadu? It's true!

I thought it was the easiest of the Falcom games. The Dragonslayer series doesn't even come close to the ridiculous gameplay that is Wanderers from Ys.

I remember my dad, my brothers and I spent for ever trying to beat that game... It was impossible, we had no idea what we were doing.

That's what I remember of it.

Not knowing what the hell was going on. At all. Apparently you play as a family of lumberjacks who decide to take down a dragon who is about to be revived--who conveniently resides in a dungeon directly below your house.

The game wasn't that confusing. It was traditional "manual tells you nothing" NES game but the object of the game was to collect the 4 crowns to acquire the Dragon Slayer sword. Each of the crowns could only be obtained by a specific character so a first time player basically has a 25% chance of choosing the right guy for the right stage.

And Lyll was the best character. Long range, highest jump, most magic power.

You can also play as their pet. Who sucked.

B-but Pochi was invincible (against monsters)!
