A nice if simple look at cities in comic book/pulp culture. The article focuses on The Spirit and TDK the most but Watchmen and Max Payne are very grimy, neo-noir New York stories coming to theaters soon too.
The author seems to focus on New York the most - it's safe now, sure, the criminals will point you in the direction of your train home after they take your money - but what about everywhere else? If Mike Davis' "Planet of Slums" is accurate the majority of humanity is located in metropolitan areas and every place is ****ing awful. With that in mind, the filthy city isn't going anywhere, it's just going to get worse. Thus, new wave of neo-noir flicks.
