    Vinyl Records

Anyone enjoy collecting and listening to vinyl records? I'm only 16 but I love having and listening to them. I don't post here all that much so figured I'd start up a conversation.

Just found The Doors, The Clash and a Monty Python record at a flea market. So anyone else living in the past, or like me, before their time?

      On Vinyl records;

"Some people say it doesn't make a difference, but I think it's the difference that makes it."

That was from the movie Empire Records.

And I also love listening to vinyl records.

TBS is coming shortly... I finally got off my lazy self and contacted Datel, so new Max Drive software is coming thus allowing me to release my TBS.

As tinten said I have ten by pearl jam, been trying to get all the smashing pumpkins albums on vinyl as well. I've found siamese dream and adore but I'm holding out as Gish is getting a new box set put out soon and might have a new LP with that.

Why yes, I do love vinyl.

I've just got a portable Numark. It has an internal amp and can take C batteries.

The discussion of quality is pretty tiring. I just really love the presence and feel of records. That and the pretty covers, and the scratches and fuzz. Mmmmm. I don't see myself as living in the past though, as LPs are still being pressed, at equal or similar pricing to CDs. Almost all of the modern albums I've purchased come with a free digital download coupon, so hey, that's cool. Yeah.

                Re: Vinyl Records

In my music-collecting heyday, I listened to mostly indie rock and electronic stuff, and post-rock....mainly, stuff not on a major label. So, yeah. I've got about 5 milk crates full of vinyl. Granted, some of that is stuff from thrift stores (either classic rock/jazz/etc), or weird obscure stuff I bought to use for the vocal samples (a motivational record for houseplants...sample content includes stuff such as, "Good morning, houseplants. Yes, it's wake-up time. Today, we'll stretch our branches as high as they will go...." or preachers from the early 70s talking about the evils of rock music....sample content includes, "Rotten, filthy, dirty, lewd, lascivious JUNK called rock and roll.").

I also own about 50 or so 7"s, or what they used to call 45s. Now, they do not have that huge circle in the middle. It's placed on the platter using the same size hole for the spindle as all full-length albums. I still own (but need a new stylus for) a direct drive Technics (the thing weighs a TON....which to me indicates quality...it's metal, not plastic like turntables nowadays) I bought from a thrift store for $25.

Yeah....vinyl. Good times. Oh, and an artist's recorded material released onto vinyl or CD or cassette or 8-track or whatever is called an ALBUM. When one refers to the new Radiohead, it should be referred to as their new ALBUM, not their new CD. CD, vinyl, tape, etc, is a medium or format. Kids these days I think are lost on the concept of a singer or a band releasing a new album. People read the word album, and they automatically assume "record album," which would cause them to think an album is only called such on vinyl. A record (or vinyl) is once again only a medium or format. Any musical group's recorded output on a single release is an album. This is a small pet peeve of mine, so glad you allowed me the chance to air my grievances.

I agree with Smurtle about the presence and feel of records. You can't compare it to the cd or mp3. Its magical almost.

Nah, that's just THE CAVE YOU'RE LIVING IN *chief Wiggum laugh*. Just kidding. I never caught onto why they're still popular. But thinking ahead. The same things gonna happen to CDs probably.

My mom gave all of mine away to my sister. I had over 100+ records.

                              This.

I have a friend who calls all vinyl "albums" and every thing else by the format. It annoys me to no end. Same with LP. An LP is a full length album an EP is also a collection of songs but much shorter than an LP and not usually counted with studio albums.
