A Firsthand Account On The May ICE Raid In Iowa

    http://news.newamericamedia.org/news...6&section_id=1

It's rather long and very heart-wrenching but provides much insight into the workings of the U.S. government in concern to immigration and small town matters. I know most of you won't read this, but I can hope that at least some of you do. Had anyone else even heard about the ICE Raids? I fear that too many Americans are ignorant of the things being done in their name, I can hope that you guys show me that that fear is unfounded. For the full affect I suggest you read some other articles but here is a brief synopsis below:

*THIS IS NOT A SUMMARY OF THE ARTICLE* Just back story

Back in May the ICE(Immigration And Customs Enforcement) organization performed the single largest raid for Illegal Immigrants in the history of the U.S. in a small town in Iowa. They raided a company called Agriprocessors whose workforce was about 75% illegal immigrants. They arrested some 300 illegal immigrants though they had search warrants for 697. Some were children others mothers whom they arrested some while releasing others for soon deportation. A lot of the immigrants were illiterate and this required an awful lot of interpreters to speak the U.S.'s case to the workers, the article is the firsthand account from one of the interpreters.

I'm pretty sure that ICE just raped this small town in Iowa, there's no way that the company can make a comeback after losing 75% of it's workforce while most of the people in town fled because they knew it would be a ghost town soon.

At the local high school, only three of the 15 Latino students came back on Tuesday, while at the elementary and middle school, 120 of the 363 children were absent. In the following days the principal went around town on the school bus and gathered 70 students after convincing the parents to let them come back to school; 50 remained unaccounted for. Some American parents complained that their children were traumatized by the sudden disappearance of so many of their school friends. The principal reported the same reaction in the classrooms, saying that for the children it was as if ten of their classmates had suddenly died. Counselors were brought in. American children were having nightmares that their parents too were being taken away. The superintendant said the school district’s future was unclear: “This literally blew our town away.”

In some cases both parents were picked up and small children were left behind for up to 72 hours. Typically, the mother would be released “on humanitarian grounds” with an ankle GPS monitor, pending prosecution and deportation, while the husband took the first turn in serving his prison sentence. Meanwhile the mother would have no income and could not work to provide for her children. Some of the children were born in the United States and are American citizens. Sometimes one parent was a deportable alien while the other was not. “Hundreds of families were torn apart by this raid,” said a Catholic nun. “The humanitarian impact of this raid is obvious to anyone in Postville. The economic impact will soon be evident.”
I suggest you give it a read.

I am very happy things like this are done, and I hope they continue to be done at a much higher rate.

don't want to lose 75% of your workforce? hire legal citizens. everyone in the country is hurting for work. lets give priority the the people who are supposed to be here first, please. the illegal immigrants are making the already terrible job market even worse.

who do I write to congratulate the people who did this?

There has to be over a hundred of people in America willing to get up and move to Iowa for a decent job.

I dont want to hear the "they hire illegal immigrants because its the only way to stay in business" argument, since that is the same damn excuse companies use to justify outsourcing everything to india and other countries.

and they arent jobs that no legal american would want to do. there are people whose jobs are manually artificially inseminating horses and cows. people will do ANYTHING for a damn paycheck.

The people in that town knew that illegal immigrants were being employed and they had no problem with it. I don't think that the federal government should be ****ing with things that obviously fall under the jurisdiction of local government. Illegal immigrants taking jobs from legal citizens who are looking for jobs, that's bad. When the entire town is employed and they don't mind illegal immigrants working there, why shouldn't they be allowed to work towards citizenship? Raise the money and have your relatives move to America so that you don't have to live in the squalor that America has made for you in your other country. Read the article, then please make an educated response to this. If you still feel the same way, then by all means express it, but read the article first.

it's not a local government issue. illegal immigration is a federal crime.

random towns arent allowed to ignore federal laws as they see fit.

Then you don't agree with the gay rights movement,or the medical marijuana movement? They're both based off the same mentality, small towns going against the federal standard until the state has to recognize that the people want change. It's small movements like this that plant the seed of change in the larger system. Please, read the article and then come back and discuss this with me.

EDIT - I will admit that the people who are behind the political movements for gay rights and legal weed are actually trying to change the law instead of just ignoring it. I think the maxim that would fit best for how the small town in Iowa was operating would be: "Harm non, do what ye shall."

                    What?

EDIT - I feel I should clarify, I'm not against deporting Illegal Immigrants. I'm against killing small towns in the process. When you displace that many citizens you create a rift in the entire economic system in place in that state. A move of this caliber will also not help the overall problem we have with food prices going up. The last words of the article I think summed it up rather well. "There's got to be a better way."

That's quite different than ruining families. I don't care about the things that people do to themselves. When Joe Hicks can't get a job because Juan Alien gets to work for cheap since the town turns a blind eye, that's when this **** is stupid.

But everyone(well, everyone looking for work with I'm sure a few minor exceptions) in town WAS employed. No jobs were being taken. The immigrants found a niche in ALL of the U.S. and they filled it. I'm sorry but if you're not more intelligent than an illiterate migrant worker when it comes to finding work, then you don't deserve to have a job in the first place as far as i care. It's not like these workers just came across the border and stood in front of a Lowe's looking for work. THEY WENT TO IOWA. That's not near the border.

that's a pretty short-sighted way to look at it.

I agree with Valk. The idea that these are jobs nobody wants is bull**** as well. I'm sure plenty of people would move to Iowa for a secure job.

Nobody said these were jobs that no one wants. According to this the unemployment rate for Iowa is at about 3.8 percent which is nearly 2% lower than the national average(Found here.) Plenty of people would move to Iowa for a steady job I'm sure. But like I said, if you don't have the intelligence to find a job over an illiterate migrant worker, I'd rather have the migrant worker as a citizen than your dumbass.

EDIT - DK brought something to my attention. I'm not trying to garner sympathy for these workers, I'm just trying to raise awareness of the facts of the matter.
