    Square iPod game: Song Summoner

Anyone else play this little game yet besides me? I was browsing through the games in the iTunes store, and was shocked to see a Square Enix Game listed. After reading a couple reviews, I was sold, and bought it. (only 5 bucks).

This game is freakin cool. It looks and feels a lot likes Final Fantasy Tactics, only no where near as in depth. It's an actual RPG with a storyline, and theres shops to buy stuff in the towns.

You get your "troopers" from your songs on your iPod, where they're randomly generated and have random classes (fighter, knight, monk, archer, mage).

The only downsides are the game drains the iPods battery as fast as playing a video, and I found myself fighting against the click-wheel. But yeah, don't let me enjoy this game by myself!

I LOVE the idea behind the game. Squeenix would do themselves a favor by releasing this as an XBL or PSN Arcade game, using the songs on your respective system's HDD.

I am coming for all of you!

I was excited when I saw the video and it said it was already out.

I was extremely disappointed when I found out it didn't work with the touch.

I'll see later if it works on my girlfriend's ipod, and then I could take requests to see what troopaz I get from songs.

The problem is that, as far as I've read, the troops actually have nothing to do with the songs? So it's like Monster Rancher. Not that that's a bad thing, but with the limited parameters of a song you think they'd be able to have the people influenced by the kinds of songs you picked.

Re: Square iPod game: Song Summoner

yeah, it's kinda like monster rancher, and I think most of the songs are completely random, but they do try to make the songs have a more important influence. For example,

Sometimes when I was making my army of troops, the dude would recommend a song with the word "hero" or a song with a really long name, and even a song with the number 1 or 7 in the title. Selecting a song that fit in the guys category would have a chance of you creating a higher class trooper.

And if you listen to the songs on your iPod when not playing the game, the game will give your troops an extra boost in battle the next time you play. So I just picked songs I listen to often, and threw them in a playlist.

I ultimately ended up with a bunch of "bronze" ranged troops (the lowest) and an abundance of fighters and monks.

So earlier this year (or maybe last year...I forget), I bought an open item ipod from my work. It's a nano (8 gig) from the last gen....tall and thin, not short and fat. I do not believe it has video capabilities, so would this game even work on it? If so, I might physically touch my ipod for the first time in a good number of months.

on the system requirements on the iTunes page, it says compatible with iPod nano 3rd gen, and 5th gen regular ipods.

if you listen to Baby Got Back, do you get a knight named Sir Mixalot?

I decided to do some experimenting to see exactly how random the song-to-trooper formula is.

I did 5 songs from Sir Mixalots Baby got Back, and 5 songs from Regina Spektors Fidelity. Two completely different song genres. Here's the results:

Baby got Back (name - class - rank - rating)

                      Flat Spin - Monk - Bronze - Rating C
                      Northern Gale - Archer - Bronze - Rating C
                      Northern Gale - Archer - Bronze - Rating A
                      Flat Spin - Monk - Bronze - Rating C
                      Flat Spin - Monk - Bronze - Rating B

Fidelity (name - class- rank - rating)

                      Candy Slice - Mage - Bronze - Rating C
                      Candy Slice - Mage - Bronze - Rating B
                      Swan Song - Mage - Bronze - Rating A
                      Swan Song - Mage - Silver - Rating C
                      Candy Slice - Mage - Bronze - Rating A

Soooo... Baby got Back got me Archers and Monks, while Fidelity got me only Mages. I'm sure someone will even more time on their hands will figure out the song formula soon enough.
