I finally got RM2. Ordered it from Gamestop.com and it came today. I was disappointed that it didn't come with the case or manual but that's to be expected (the b!tches >:{ ). What I didn't expect was for the game to not work. I know the blue discs are a lot of trouble but my PS2 won't recognize it no matter how many times I try even after cleaning the disc and the lens. I know my system isn't worn out because it's less than a year old. Does the slim PS2 just have a harder time reading blue discs? I'm going to go to my cousin's house and try it on his thick PS2 to see if it'll work or maybe it's just the disc is defective. In the meantime is there anything I can do to get it to read?

RPGM2 only sucks as much as the mind trying to program it.
If turning the PS2 on it's side (yeah, I hate so doing as well) does not help, you may have a bad disc. Or a bad PS2.
See if they can play it where you bought it. If so, scream.
Good Luck with it.
Peace.

He ordered it online. Anyway, try using a lens cleaner disc. It worked wonders on my formerly broken PS2.
If that doesn't help try either
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/ps2_disc_read_error.txt
or
http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/ps2_disc_read_error_a.txt
(copy and paste the links into your address bar.)
If all else fails, take comfort in that what Alzar said is mostly true, It is inferior to the first one IMO.

Oops. I missed the ".com" at the end there. So sorry.
But won't a local Gamestop back-up the Website store? If you've got a receipt and shipping materials they should help.
That is not to say they will, just that they should.
Good luck with it.
More Peace (can't get enough of that these days).

If it's the "Disk Read Error" problem, Sony will fix it for free under warranty or not. Their number is 1-800-345-SONY. The unfortunate thing is that the problem will keep coming back and you'll have to keep sending it to them.
The "Disk Read Error" problem comes from a design flaw in the early version (1st year and a half or so) and has nothing to do with RPGM2 or the discs (no matter what other people say).
Sine you said yours was about a year old and the newer slim-PS2 model I know this is not the problem. The problem is that for one year or so the slim-PS2 models were made faultily and don't work with various older games (RPGM2 being one of them). My knowledge of this specifically is not great, but there is a topic somewhere in the Technical Help forum at these forums ( http://doansdomain.proboards27.com/ ) that talks about it more. Look there for more info; that's the only place I've heard of this from. I would link directly to it but I haven't been able to view anything there lately because the forums are updating.
Good luck!
(Moderators, I am only trying to help the topic creator, not promote Doan's forums)
Edit: Of course, if you bought the game on ebay or something there's a chance it's defective. It probably is the system though.

It's not a disc read error. I get the "Please insert a PlayStation or PlayStation 2 format disc." If it can't work on my PS2 I'll have to return it.
Thanks WKirk but I can't seem to get around in that board either.

I used to get the exact same red screen of death. I picked up a maxell lens cleaner CD and used it, and now it works fine.

I love when people call it a design flaw, when some people who have had their PS2's since launch, have NEVER had Disk Read Errors on their PS2's.
Edit: I got the 2nd run of PS2's in Feb '01, never had DRE's. I traded it in back in October or November of year to get a newer PS2(the newest one before they changed to the slim), so that i could have the extra remote functionality and dvd compatibility.
Maybe 1 DRE through the life of my system.
Its not all about "design flaw"s.

what would you call it then? around 40% of PS2's have this problem.
gamestop stores won't back up their products if you order them online. i oredered an xbox online, it didn't work, and they wouldn't take it at the store so i had to pay 20 bucks just to ship it back to them.

No way Valk, that isnt even close to being accurate. It is actually only about 3-5%, and that is an estimated amount. the actual amount of people who have contacted Sony or made an issue of it, has been less than 2%, and as soon as i can find the independent article about it, i'll post it here.

most people have fixed it themselves, or just bought a new console. those dont get reported to sony.
speaking of which, sony of japan wont fix anything that goes wrong on the PS2 (they were the same with the PS1) so thats an entire country left out of any reports.

I don't know if it's the corporation wide rule but my local GameStops won't let you return systems even if you bought them from the store. I bought an XBox and wanted to return it and they said they do not return systems. He didn't even ask whether or not it was defective just "No returns on systems."

Sorry Valk, even if that is true, there is no way in hell 40% of PS2's have been defective. You are looking at 5-10% tops, and that is WAY over reaching. There is no way in hell there are or were 8 million defective PS2's out there.
And, if anything, it would be a "manufacturing defect" not a "design flaw", otherwise, every single PS2 with that flaw would have failed.

I honestly have a hard time imagining half of sony's PS2's working properly.

okay, now you are just trying to mess with me.
I'll admit, i may be a bit biased, since it is the best console this generation, but if there were really that many defective PS2's, it would be nationwide news with a gigantic lawsuit against Sony on every front page of every newspaper by now.
And if i have to eat my words tomorrow because of a news story about just what i said, i'll give you a PS2 game of your choice(within limits).
And just remember, i made a similar deal with...Oni, and i lost, so you have a chance of winning, hehe.
Edit: And just to clarify, i'm not talking about a news article in one paper about a class action lawsuit against Sony, i'm talking about a major multimedia article about it.

Eh, I've had one or two discs give me some trouble, but usually it went away after a couple of tries or moving the system about or cleaning it or anything like that. I've also used the classic NES "blow in it" method on my ps2. Oddly, that worked as well. Other than those handful of times though, I've never had a problem. Mine was a second gen as well I think.

no major news sites covered the first wave of the japanese PSP, from which nearly all had massive problems, with around 200 or so confirmed to be dead fresh from the box.

My ps2 is dying down I think, I never got a DRE or a Insert PS/PS2 Formatted disk when I first got it (and I'll tell ya, that thing went under serious stress with how much time I spent on RPGM2 :lol ) until just recently, where ALMOST every time i boot it up, it will say one of the following, and I'll open and close the disk tray again, then it works perfectly. As for the 40% thing, I always figured that percentage was bigger :lol

Ask how many people here have had trouble with blue disks, especially RPGM2. That'll give you a good idea of how big the problem is.
I had that problem myself, though that was partially because my PS2 would have trouble reading CDs after two or three years of use and one repair (the first repair, it wouldn't read DVDs).

I tried the DRE fix about two months ago and my PS2 hasn't read a single disc since. I want to get a new slim PS2, but that means no HD support for RM3. Damn these acronyms.

All 'new' RPG Makers will suck, unless the developers implement a way to make your own character models and graphics. This pre-set stuff is cool, but you are so limited in what you can create.
That is my homework assignment for Enterbrain...figure out a way to program/make a 'real' character creation engine, or add the option for a more advanced 2D anime Maker.

I managed to get that part out of the topic at those forums:
Kumo Shinagi -
"I need to know this:
Your PS2:
Did you buy your PS2 around 200-2002/3?
The game disc:
Did you buy it new or used?
If yes to the PS2 question:
RPG Maker 2 will about 70%+ of the not work on that model of the PS2. Get a newer PS2, or send it to sony and get it repaired."
PS2's do suck ass!

I've confirmed it as a defective disc not a PS2 problem.
1) Tried it on my cousin's fatty PS2, it didn't work.
2) Borrowed one of his blue disc games (Pac-Man Fever, he's 12 okay?) and it worked just fine in my PStwo.
So it's a bad copy of RM2. The weird thing is it failed differently in his PS2 than in mine. Mine always gives me the "insert PS/2 format disc" screen. His just bounced back to the browser. Do the older PS2 models not have the format disc message?

I think mine did both bump me to the browser screen and "insert PS2 disk" screen. Not at the same failure, though.

I went by Babbage's today and they had RM2 with case and manual so I got it. And this one actually works. I still have the defective one from Gamestop.com and since they replace returns with the same item which I don't need now I'll just try to take it to a pawn shop or something. I also bought a Max Drive off of Ebay a couple days ago so I'll be fully equipped pretty soon. I played Fu-Ma for a few minutes so far and I actually like the graphics a lot better than I thought I would but the game is so slow paced it makes Gobli look action-packed. It's mostly just the fact of using a menu to talk to characters or check items that slows things down too much.

Triangle will act as 'Talk' or 'Look'. Don't be discouraged if you quit fu-ma, everyone does. :lol

I didn't. Went all the way through, because I hoped the game would get better. It didn't.

My PS2 does has the same problem. Either I get the "red screen of death," or the disc just sits in there making tapping noises. I remedy that by resetting the console and listening for about five seconds until I hear a "beep" sound, meaning the disc is finally reading. Probably won't work for you, but I don't know...might be worth a shot...

I played Fu-Ma to the cave that leads to the last level and quit.
