okay, so I've been recently been thinking about 2D vs 3D. There have been posts up lately about older FF's and newer FF's and whats better etc. I'm personaly a fan of FF6, for many reasons, but something that I felt about that game, and so many other 2D games was that the grafics in those games where more or less just giving me an idea about what was going on in the story- but really, I was translating those images into something bigger in my mind. A 2D game in esscence, is more like a book with words and pictures, as it interacts with my imagination. A 3D game however, is doing more of the imagining for you(like a movie). Dont get me wrong, I love 3D games. I'm just saying that 2d games use a different part of the brain on an interactive level, and for some this is satisfying, while others not so.
Let me say that maybe its becuase im older(I recieved an atari 2600 when I was 6, now im 29) and those older 2d games trained my mind to do more of the imagining. I dont shudder at the sight of such a game. I wonder if maybe some of the younger gamers just skipped that training with the invention of the playstation age(no offense intended).
So I wonder if Age has much to do with it when comparing what FF is better. obviosly almost all of you reading this dont mind RPG maker 1 too much. and the fact that it is still in use says something about us.
Also I think this 2D/3D training effects the way we design the games, for example how do we visualise the chars. and locations as we are making them up? are we really thinking of RPGM 1 grafics, or are we dreaming up something bigger and better only then to translate that into 2D? I think this drasticly effects the way we express the story to the player.
although I look forward to working with RPGM 3, I think it's important for us remember our roots, and that there was a day that 2D could exite us just the way 3D does now.
