    Stan Winston 1946 - 2008

Special effects expert responsible for Jurassic Park, Terminator, T2, Aliens, Predator, The Thing and Iron Man passed away. Amazing that the grandfather of SFX Ray Harryhausen outlives him.

I always loved Winston's use of practical effects like puppetry and make-up (often combined with CG and animation), and I hope filmmakers like Guillermo Del Toro, Peter Jackson and Jon Favreau continue to keep the practical tradition alive.

My girlfriend and I like to play around with sfx makeup and naturally I spend a good deal of time researching his techniques. He'll remain an inspiration in the field.

As soon as I saw his name on the main page, I thought to myself, "Please don't let me read that Stan Winston died." Alas, it's true. That is seriously a damn shame. And I was not aware that Harryhausen was still kicking around. Hmmmm.....

          RIP, Mr. Winston.

JP is still one of my favorite movies ever. Hell, nearly ALL the movies this guy helped do the special effects for are my all time favorite movies.

His effects kicked ass. But death doesn't skip the rich or famous.

                    ...

I don't really think Favreau could give a monkey's ball about special effects outside of Iron Man.
