My comp has some bad stuff on it.

Yeappp, someone got SOMETHING bad on the comp. It constantly popped up messages telling me to download "anti-virus" and such. AVG fixed most of it, but there are still a few problems -
    • It won't let me open task manager. It says it was "locked by administrator" (which is, of course, BS.)
    • My desktop changes to a link to "windows-privacy-protection.com" (FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT PUT THAT IN YOUR BROWSER.) There's more numbers after it, but I tried to change my desktop and it seemed to work. If that error comes up again I'll screenshot.
    • Some websites don't load. Confirmed nonworking sites - any PhPBB forum, google (not gmail though), yahoo, myspace, kongregate.

    Anyone have any idea?

Sounds like you got one nasty piece of spyware. Have you done a system restore yet?

    Don't copy that floppy!

You'll probably need to do some clean up by booting into safe mode.

My friend had the same issue as Hito. A system restore fixed it all up. It'd be nice if safe mode wasn't necessary.

Bah, I can't get to google still, would someone give me a refresher on what a system restore entails? Err, not how to do it, I know that. But what will happen.

[EDIT: Nevermind, no restore points. ]

Re: My comp has some bad stuff on it.

It basically reverts back to the exact way you had your computer at the restore point with exception to personal files.

Ex:if you use a restore point dated 6-3-08 itll restore all system setting & registry to what it was on 6-3, if you installed any programs since then youll have to reinstall them, however all personal files youve made since 6-3 will stay, SR only effects system files.

            No restore points? That sucks

Fairly easy way of possibly fixing it:

Try going into Run and typing "msconfig", go into the startup tab and uncheck everything you dont recognize...reboot and go see if you can find that spyware program by using the filepaths listed to unfamiliar files in the startup list...best to check each program name online to see what it does, simpley type in "htr556.exe" in search to find out what it does.

Might as well turn off everything in the start up tab, really. None of it is strictly necessary.
Took me 15 minutes to remember how to change my signature, and this is all I came up with.

                Except explorer.exe

My sister faced a similar problem, and my buddy's room mate too. I suggest doing a several sweeps with AVG until it finds nothing, or nothing of consequence. Then use your windows CD to do a Restore. You'll have to redo all your Windows Updates, but woopdee doo.

JLaCroix told me to do that and it worked. Except she still can't get into desktop properties, and she might not be able to get into Task Manager either...

Oh, I figured that since it showed up in your list of processes in the task manager it would show up in the start up box.

Ever accidently turn off that process? Yeah, good thing I knew how to get at the Run window and start it back up

Nah, as far as I know everything that is in the start-up configuration are helper processes. None of them are required to run basic functionality, and many of them launch automatically if you need them anyway, so there's no reason to have most of them on (the major exception would be any anti-virus stuff, which you probably want to leave on, because if you leave it off of start-up it means you have to launch it manually).

Suppose someone could correct me if I'm wrong, as I'm not an OS guy, just a programmer.

youre right, nothing has to be on in the startup list.

what program language do you use? All I know is VB6...

                            JPS-

Well, I'm 2 weeks away from graduating from DeVry with a BS in Game and Simulation Programming, so there's been a strong focus on C# for tools development and C++ with DirectX/FMOD APIs for game development.

I've also tinkered with XNA as it's free and C# based.

Two other languages I've had courses on (not through DeVry, just community college) are COBOL and VB.NET, which I think is the next evolution of VB6 (correct me if I'm wrong there, it's been about four years).

My main focus is C++ though. I get really annoyed at languages without pointers.

Consequently - if anyone knows of any entry-level job openings in the industry, I'm about to start looking hardcore and would appreciate any leads.

But back to the point - all the OS and hardware junk I know is basically second hand advice that I ask one of my more OS/hardware capable peers. I'm rubbish at the stuff and can only give basic advice myself.
