I'd like one, but we already have an advance. Maybe if it's super cheap.
Hmm... it's been (almost) confirmed to be bundled with the Play-Yan adaptor; that thingie that plays MP3s and MP4 video.
EDIT: Just curious, what's your relationship with Dave?
Nixon
05-28-2005, 03:10 PM
That's a plus, and would be pretty sweet depending on how much you can store on it.
Dave and I are experimental test monkeys at the same research facility.
Actually, we've been together for about ten years, and have been engaged for a while. We'll elope one of these days, when we're bored enough.

that is quite a surprise.
but yeah. have to be cheap for me to not just keep my sp.
You could've gotten a fish for that kind of cash. Oh, well, close enough.
Oh, as a note, the GBM's screen is merely about half an inch smaller than the GBA's, so it's not all that microscopic.

Apparently, it isn't as dumb as it seemed.
Making a link to some MSN site doesn't mean it isn't as dumb as it seems. It's still a dumb idea; Game boy advance, except smaller.
And not only won't it be bundled with the Play-Yan (he said "we might sell it" in North America, not "we will bundle it"), but the Play-Yan is crappy anyway. My friend has one, and the audio is barely freaking discernable. Its maximum encoding quality is like 28kbp/s, which, to anyone who knows a little about audio is complete crap.
Sorry about the rant, but the Micro is a compact (semi-pointless) gadget and nothing more. Just because you can buy a half-assed addon that lets you play crappy-sounding mp3s and video doesn't mean it suddenly defeats the PSP or iPod or any of the other things it's compared to. I guess I just know too many Nintendo fanboys who go around touting the Micro like it's the greatest thing ever made. :(
Nixon
05-30-2005, 05:25 PM
We weren't saying it was better than anything. Seriously, nobody mentioned the PSP except you.
And if it's cheap enough, it's something that I might buy to take with me and play on the bus. I wouldn't ever feel comfortable taking the PSP, because I'd get jacked faster than a garage sale copy of Chrono Trigger. Also, the battery life will permit me to be lazy about recharging it. Dave has to charge the PSP all the time. I already have some games for this, so I wouldn't have to invest anything on that end.

Apparently, it isn't as dumb as it seemed.
Don't worry, it is.
Don't worry about it too much, Redneck. We didn't exactly pimp it as a rabid PSP killer or the greatest thing since sliced bread. It's an interesting little doodad, sure, however it's definitely no James Bond gadget. It's just a little something Nintendo made for the image-conscious; something to bring a few more people in who wouldn't be interested in getting any other GBA.
I may not get one myself unless whimsy kicks me in the tush and throws me into the store. The odds of that fluxuate.
Oh, and I added "(almost)" in that one post some time ago because it wasn't confirmed that the Play-Yan adaptor would be bundled with the GBM. In spite of the latter articles and interviews that made it less and less likely, I was just too lazy to edit the post further.

The lettuce was wilted and unsatisfying.
But yeah, I knew making a point wouldn't go over well, but if you go to any other site it's being hyped as a <insert portable device here> killer that will own everything somehow, despite being just a GBA.
You guys didn't compare it to anything, but if you go to any other video game site the topics are all "Have you seen that new SMALL GAME BOY!? I bet you're selling your iPod and PSP at the store right now and pre-ordering one because it's the best of them all!?!?!?!"
I just think it's pretty sad that anyone would want to spend their money on a product that's been out for 5(?) years just because Nintendo slightly changed it.
I'll be quiet.
Paranoia strikes everyone.

I know it's the same thing as a GBA, just smaller. I need a tiny portable that won't be stolen or easily damaged in transit.
Maybe since we aren't saying the things you seem to hear everywhere else, you don't need to react in such a way. We don't really need you to reiterate a point that doesn't apply to this conversation.
Just take a deep breath, roll your shoulders around and RELAX.

I just don't see why anyone would get it over a GBA or GBA SP. I'm guessing it'll cost more than those since they'll drop in price yet again when it comes out. And it can't even play GB & GBC games. Are there really people who find the GBA or SP to be too big? Because as far as I'm concerned they're almost too small already.

Wow... :|
And some people said that Nintendo is the greatest company when it comes to innovation... :|
I guess so. It takes creativity to con someone into buying the exact same thing again, and again, and again...
I can't really complain too much, because I have both a GBA and an SP. I just happen to like backlighting for my handhelds, which wasn't available on the original GBA.

I want something super small that I can take with me everywhere WITHOUT having to worry about damaging it. I'd love to take the DS and PSP with me, but they are far too fragile. We don't have a lot of games for the DS or the PSP (at least ones that I'm interested in).
However, I already have a decent amount of games for this thing, so I don't have to spend any extra money on those.
I'm not looking for innovation here, and I don't recall hearing that the micro was considered to be all that "innovative" by Nintendo.
The other handhelds are nice and all, but I'm on the bus everyday thus can't take the risk of them getting ****ed up and/or stolen.
Does this make sense?

It was comfortably small, frontlit, the design protects the screen, and I would love to own one. I really don't think that the Micro is nessesary.

Maybe my hands are just too big, but the SP feels cramped and after playing for awhile, my palms between my thumb and index finger begin to throb.
If they had made it just... half an inch wider, I'd be happy as Michelangelo with a pizza.

The SP is a little too big for the bus, and I'm hesitant to store it in my backpack (where it has a high chance of getting knocked around).
I just happen to like backlighting for my handhelds, which wasn't available on the original GBA.
You know what's really sad? Dave used to have a JP gameboy pocket (silver) that was backlit. It was so awesome. You could flip it on and off with ease, and it looked great. Too bad we had to sell it, but hey, it went for $200 (he bought it for like 80 bucks back in the day).
Why didn't they do that with all the gameboys? The world will never know.

1. I am a fairly small-sized person with small hands.
2. You haven't been on an Austin bus. It's not only cramped (design-wise), it's always packed with people. Some of these people have weapons and bad intentions, so I want something that only the people closest to me would notice... something I could hide or palm.

What are you talking about? I asked one question, if you remember correctly. In fact, here it is:
"..what? How is it too big for anything?"
Frankly I am not familiar with a place where a clam-design gameboy that measures about 4''x4'' could be considered "too big" to carry around.
I just asked one innocent question... furthermore, it had nothing to do with my preference of any kind of product. If asking how an SP could be considered too big is considered "thorough grilling" or something a fanboy would say, then I officially understand the internet that much less than I thought I did.

Personally I love the GBA and if I were to ever really go anywhere with game development it would've been the first platform I'd shoot for. However, I think it's more than obvious that most of the real must have games on the system hit in the console's first and second generation of titles, as such they are all a ***** to get :(

I thoght the shape of the SP wasn't cool. It wasn't big enough for my hands either. Thats why I want them to make something the same size and shape as the advance with a backlight. Now that would be cool. I might think about the Micro but who knows how hard it will be to play it because of its size. Maybe if you could get a connector that lets you plug it into the gamecube and use the gamecube controller but that would get rid of the small size idea. Another downfall is people with bad eyes already have a bad enough time trying to see the regular GBA screen. My glasses help but sometimes I forget them. Ha I figured it out, Laser eye surgery.

No no no, it's not about the backlighting anymore, it's about STYLE!
"We're making the gorgeous Game Boy Micro for image-conscious folks who love video games, the ones who want the look of their system to be as cool as the games they play on it," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Because of its diminutive size and industrial-hip look, Game Boy Micro immediately identifies the person playing it as a trendsetter with discriminating style."

I was always worried about my GBA getting crushed in my backback too. However, I managed to solve the problem by purchasing one of those cylindrical carrying-cases (normally used to contain your marijuana accessories. They're cheap and very sturdy.) from the local head shop--which, in my area, is also right by the local high school. As far as the Gameboy Micro goes...

Then I bought an SP (mainly for CC) and got 3 more games.
Were those games worth the $160? Not really.

I just don't see any point in buying one when you could get the exact same capabilities from a regular GBA for much cheaper when the only benefit is that it's smaller. I saw it for the first time today. It's so small, yet so comfortable. And shiny. And surprisingly sturdy. I like how the faceplates actually cover the screen, so if it gets scratched, remove it and attach another faceplate. Good as new. Also, they come with three extra free faceplates.
The one I saw had the classic Famicom faceplate and the new Play-Yan, in case you were wondering.
