Reliving Dragon Quest IV on the NES (Update: I Beat It).

I'm in somewhat of a nostalgic mood for some reason.

I heard that the Nintendo DS remakes of the Zenithian Trilogy (Dragon Quest IV through VI) are being released here in the states. Exciting news, but I can't possibly truly appreciate remakes of games I haven't beaten yet. I usually, in most cases, refuse to play remakes of games unless I've played through the originals.

I've beaten quite a few Dragon Quest games, but never Dragon Quest IV-VI. My original NES cart of DQIV would never hold a charge, so I would always lose my save file somewhere within chapter 2. I was never able to beat it.

Well, I'm trying again with Dragon Quest IV. Not only that, I plan to try to beat the entire Zenethian Trilogy before the DS remakes start coming in September. This is going to be a long summer, my copies of DQV and DQVI are untranslated imports since that's all you can get right now. Playing those two will be my biggest challenge.

Anyway, this topic is about my reliving DQIV. It's been years since I've played it, and I'm already up to chapter 4. Here are my thoughts about reliving a classic RPG.

I used to consider DQIII the best of the NES games, due to its amazing (at the time) job system and gameplay. However, DQIII lacked character development and story because all the characters were created by you, so only the hero had a back story.

Dragon Quest IV, for those that haven't played it already, (I bet most of you have) was told in five different chapters, the first four dealing with the backstories of characters your hero would eventually join up with. Unfortunately, gameplay took a hit because the job system was removed, but it was removed in favor of having a back story for each character, which I forgive. (Although I didn't forgive FFIV for this, it didn't pull it off well).

Dragon Quest IV reminds me of Final Fantasy VI in so many ways its scary. First, all your characters have back stories and their reason for joining up for a common cause, each character has his or her own set unique skills that make them different, and at the end of the game you scour the world in search of all the characters to get them to join your cause. Also like FFVI, you can swap out any of the characters to customize your own team. Also, there are uncontrollable characters in addition to the basic 9 that offer certain bonuses while not being under your control, like Umaro in FFVI.

So far I'm having a ton of fun with DQIV. I didn't seem to get into it as much as a kid as I am now. The graphics suck majorly, and are alright for an NES game, but for some reason the game is just fun.

So feel free to discuss Dragon Quest IV or any other DQ game, or whatever old game you may be reliving.

I actually can't to play DQ IV V VI. Hopefully they will be better than the remake of FF III.
Twothorp was in immense pain. The blisters did not care.

I think most of the remakes are ports of the existing remakes on PSOne and PS2 but I could be wrong. While I don't exactly agree with them being 3D (2D was some of the charm) I'm sure you'll be satisfied, they are all really good. However, IMHO (please don't anybody take any offense to what I'm about to say) Final Fantasy III was already the worst numbered Final Fantasy game, so there was little they could do to save it. Same with Final Fantasy IV, I hate that game almost as much as Final Fantasy III and doubt they could save it in my eyes.

Dragon Quest VI will be the best treat of the three, trust me. Even though I'm playing through DQIV on the NES right now, I still take some time to play DQVI from time to time, and that game is freaking amazing, and also freaking long. DQVI marked the return of the job system and was also able to incorporate a decent story at the same time. Dragon Quest VI is no Final Fantasy VI, but damn close.

Dragon Quest IV is great. I beat it a couple years ago. The only thing that bothered me about it was the fact that once you hit Chapter 5, you can't control your allies, instead you have to use some kind of broad strategy like "Go on the Offensive" or "Don't Use MP".

Yeah I'm not thrilled about that either. However, in the remake this is no longer a problem.

A lot of people don't know this, but on the NES version you could still enable full control of your allies, there was a Game Genie code found that returned control of your characters to you.

          Edit: The code is YYEXVTGE.

I think the AI in Dragon Quest games is pretty good! I usually turn it on for the later games too. Right now I'm replaying through VIII and I think I've manually controlled Yangus once and I'm at Simpleton.

It saves a lot of time pressing repeatedly throughout battles and speeds things along. Plus the characters will use special moves that I would have normally not bothered with and to surprising effect! Yangus' intimidate movie has saved my butt a couple of times and I normally would have never have selected it, choosing instead for just a basic attack. I think Taloon's special actions are another example of this.

tl;dr: When I'm playing the DR remake I'll be keeping the AI on.

I think you can appreciate remakes MORE if you haven't played the original since you'll be playing it for the FIRST TIME.

I dunno about DQ (I kinda hate the series) but the FF remakes are built from the ground up for the DS.

Not at all. You can't appreciate what the developers changed if you haven't played the original to judge it against.

Why would you play the same hugely long antequated RPG twice just so you can go, "Oh, they changed this"?

Because usually remakes just aren't the same even if they're good.

Re: Reliving Dragon Quest IV on the NES

I beat DQ4 the other day. It still feels weird that it's my first time beating it when it's over 15 years old.

I enjoyed the game overall. My only complaints were that the character and story development completely stopped once you got all the characters, so the last half of chapter 5 was extremely boring.

Overall, I rate the game lower than DQIII due to the static gameplay and characters that you can't customize much, in contrast to DQIII which had an amazing job system (for its time).

The story of DQ4 was the best of the 8-bit series, although the Necrosaro villian was not very fleshed out. He didn't have much of an explanation, sure he wanted to destroy the world, but there were so many things about him that weren't explained, such as HOW he was going to destroy the population, and why he joined that tournament back in Alena's scenario.

I know I'm expecting alot out of an NES game. I'm sure the remake will fill in most of the blanks.

I did have alot of fun though. While the graphics weren't amazing as typical in Dragon Quest games prior to Dragon Quest V and VI, there were some effects that blew me away for an 8-bit game. Sadly, those effects happen later in the game. For example, in several scenes they emulate the SNES mode 7 effects fairly well for an old console (although with a much lower color pallette) and some of the environments in chapter 5 were of much better graphical quality than anywhere in the previous chapters. When you beat the final boss and the master dragon rescues you, that was a pretty cool visual for an 8-bit game.

I've already started Dragon Quest V and I'm having a ton of fun with it too, way better than DQIV so far. I'm going to have the entire Zenithian trilogy beaten by the end of the summer. Wish me luck!
