I'm in somewhat of a nostalgic mood for some reason.
I heard that the Nintendo DS remakes of the Zenithian Trilogy (Dragon Quest IV through VI) are being released here in the states. Exciting news, but I can't possibly truly appreciate remakes of games I haven't beaten yet. I usually, in most cases, refuse to play remakes of games unless I've played through the originals.
I've beaten quite a few Dragon Quest games, but never Dragon Quest IV-VI. My original NES cart of DQIV would never hold a charge, so I would always lose my save file somewhere within chapter 2. I was never able to beat it.
Well, I'm trying again with Dragon Quest IV. Not only that, I plan to try to beat the entire Zenethian Trilogy before the DS remakes start coming in September. This is going to be a long summer, my copies of DQV and DQVI are untranslated imports since that's all you can get right now. Playing those two will be my biggest challenge.
Anyway, this topic is about my reliving DQIV. It's been years since I've played it, and I'm already up to chapter 4. Here are my thoughts about reliving a classic RPG.
I used to consider DQIII the best of the NES games, due to its amazing (at the time) job system and gameplay. However, DQIII lacked character development and story because all the characters were created by you, so only the hero had a back story.
Dragon Quest IV, for those that haven't played it already, (I bet most of you have) was told in five different chapters, the first four dealing with the backstories of characters your hero would eventually join up with. Unfortunately, gameplay took a hit because the job system was removed, but it was removed in favor of having a back story for each character, which I forgive. (Although I didn't forgive FFIV for this, it didn't pull it off well).
Dragon Quest IV reminds me of Final Fantasy VI in so many ways its scary. First, all your characters have back stories and their reason for joining up for a common cause, each character has his or her own set unique skills that make them different, and at the end of the game you scour the world in search of all the characters to get them to join your cause. Also like FFVI, you can swap out any of the characters to customize your own team. Also, there are uncontrollable characters in addition to the basic 9 that offer certain bonuses while not being under your control, like Umaro in FFVI.
So far I'm having a ton of fun with DQIV. I didn't seem to get into it as much as a kid as I am now. The graphics suck majorly, and are alright for an NES game, but for some reason the game is just fun.
So feel free to discuss Dragon Quest IV or any other DQ game, or whatever old game you may be reliving.

repeatedly throughout battles and speeds things along. Plus the characters will use special moves that I would have normally not bothered with and to surprising effect! Yangus' intimidate movie has saved my butt a couple of times and I normally would have never have selected it, choosing instead for just a basic attack. I think Taloon's special actions are another example of this.
