    Final Fantasy XII

Talking to a friend and reminicing about the greatest final fantasies (4 and 6), we got on the subject of FFXII. Both of us are apprehensive.

Me, mainly because I'm gonna have to control this guy:

There was a feeling associated with the older final fantasy games, one which I can't explain. Almost magical. Of all the more recent games, FFX managed to bring it back the most for me, but not even close to as strong as I recall the feelings of FF4 and 6.

What do you guys think? Is FFXII going to bring the magic back?

I hated 4. boring gameplay, boring story.

XII looks like it's going out of it's way to be stupid.

I think to like 4, you had to have played it when it came out.

It's being directed by Yasumi Matsuno so I'm confidant that it will rule, dispite what you think of the protaginist's appearance.

VI and VII are my personal favorites. VII, however good it was, permanently attracted the hordes of DBZ fanboys and graphics whores, VIII made sure they determined the direction of the series, and IX returned the series to the recycled old medieval clichedness with the addition of the trite love story of the recent FFs. X got the MTV gamers on board the wagon while recycling the same crappy love story. I don't think the original and creative FFs of their golden era will return, as appealing to teenage fanboys and MTV gamers will garner more sales and thus revenue, instead of trying something so refreshing and original that everyone else copies its formula. Although the old school FFs for the NES and SNES established today's trite cliches, they were quite inspiring for their day and everyone wanted to copy them. Now square just recycles its same old trite love stories and nancy boy teenage lead characters and throws in its Walt Disney wannabe setting and voila. Pure unadulturated crap. XII appears to be going in that direction, but I'll at least try it before I give my verdict. So far it's looking to make the same mistakes of VIII, IX, and X. Not to mention horror of horrors, X-2... *shudder*

Cecil was a role model for characters I've created throughout history... I just love healers who can fight(despite Cecil's spells sucking, except Heal/Esuna/whatever you wanna call it).

And I thoroughly enjoyed 10, thankyouverymuch. Guess I'm a sucker for sappy love stories(being the hopeless romantic that I am), as well as good music and fun battles(the Seymour battle atop Mt. Gagazet is still my favorite).

I rather have the old fashion turn based fighting.

The real thing that bothers me like most people is the look of the main character....

FF4 was my favorite, but now I can't decide between it and FF6. I liked FF4's story and music, I liked FF6's story and music. I think I partially like FF4 so much because of nostalgia. FF4 was my second FF game played (FF7 being the first), and my first 2D FF game. It was my third RPG played (first being Mario RPG), and the much more serious and well-told story (to me at least) really got my attention (I hadn't played far enough into FF7 to know what the story was about at the time). It was a frequent rental for me, until the gas station I rented it from stopped renting games. And then I finally got it for PS1, with it's much improved translation, and I finally beat it for the first time. I still play it from time to time despite it's clearly outdated everything. But then, I still play NES RPGs like FF1 and Dragon Warrior.

Oh yeah, and I'm looking forward to FFXII. Especially after seeing that E3 trailer.

I'm just glad Vaan and Ashe won't be hooking up.

I enjoyed FFI-VII and IX-X (excluding FFIIIj, which I haven't played yet), FFVI being my favorite. I have a wait-and-see attitude towards FFXII. I'm being optimistic, though, in spite of it's being a forgein concept here, for the most part.

I'm all for looking at the half-naked guys, but Vaan makes me cringe. A fighter would probably want to wear armor on his entire body... but what do I know.

I'll still check it out. I'm leery of the bunny women, though. WTF, square.
