I Can't Play Oblivion For A While. This Sucks.

Some of you may remember that I was complaining about jerkiness in Oblivion when rotating the camera.

Well, I decided to upgrade to SLI, so I bought another of the same video card and linked them up. Amazingly, my framerates doubled (up to 104FPS when running in 1280x1024 with most of the settings maxed) and the performance is amazing. The jerkiness is completely gone even when turning the camera to look at something.

However, I thought my 600watt power supply would be enough. It isn't. SLI overheats my power supply, lets out a foul burning rubber smell, and I cannot play Oblivion until I replace it. If I play it anyway, I risk blowing my entire system.

A 600 watt power supply is actually more than enough power to run SLI. In my case, my power supply was rated incorrectly, and it truly isn't 600 watts. I get what I pay for I guess, and I should've known better.

So, until I get the money for a GOOD power supply (I'm buying an SLI-certified power supply) I'm out of luck with Oblivion. So, all you people that can play the game, I envy you.

Meanwhile, my PS3 has mysteriously started to let me play the game again.

and of course, on the PS3 the graphics exceed the PC version's capabilities (higher resolution textures and improved shaders) and does it all without a hiccup.

    you should try it.

I figured you would say that. No offense, but I seriously doubt it. The 104FPS that I get with SLI is something I'd be surprised the PS3 could do. Also, you said yourself that the PS3 suffers the jerkiness problem when turning, which I no longer deal with since upgrading to SLI. I could be wrong, but how does the PS3 version compare with my 1280x1024 resolution and 104FPS?

But I'll make a deal with you: You try Oblivion on an SLI system with two 8600GT video cards, and I'll try the PS3 version. :P

Sure, I can't play mine right now, but I bought a cheapass power supply and I deserve it, I should've known better. I'd have to replace this power supply even if I didn't play Oblivion.

Edit: Please don't think I'm dissing the PS3 or its version of Oblivion, I respect both, I just don't see how it could match 1280x1024 and 104FPS. Not that it's a bad system or anything like that.

my power supply crapped out on me randomly after 2 years of working fine, and then I was told 300watts wasn't enough for my system. so, now I have 450 watts, and it still works...

450 watts is fine for most people. PCI-Express video cards eat up alot of electricity though, and if you have two, even more so.

I could remove my second video card and be able to play just fine, but ever since I experienced SLI, I can't go back.

the turning jerkiness is the only "hiccup" there is, and that's just when entering new areas. you don't really NEED 104 fps. My computer's stress test results for a few games is in the 2-300 range, which is absurd, and there's no way I would let the game run with that frame rate. also, the PS3 runs the game 720p, so 1280x720 widescreen. pretty damn good. and again, there's the higher resolution textures and improved shaders, which to me makes up for the "lower" resolution. but you lose access to all official add-ons aside from knights of the nine and shivering isles, and there's no mod support.

but you do get pretty damn consistent performance, and no worries about if your system can run it at max settings. the only time I encountered noticable slowdown was when I attempted to fill my house in anvil to the ceiling with watermelons using the item duplication trick. it started to slow down when the house was filled to my shoulders, and the game outright crashed when it got to the top of the first set of stairs. but so did my computer when I tried the same thing.

I also prefer a controller over keyboard and mouse.

and most importantly, I was just joking around with my first reply.

have you considered dropping the frame rate to 60fps? that would probably take a big load off your system.

Found the game boring at first, but after the first Oblivion Gate I've been having a blast. God it is so easy to get consumed by this massive world. Plus, all of these books with countless pages. It almost seems too immersive. :3

do you have the SLI set so one graphics card renders each half of the screen, or does it just share the workload?

60fps was what I was getting before I upgrade to SLI. At 60fps the game randomly stutters. The game runs much better at ~104fps. This doesn't mean it runs faster, it just runs smoother.

Anyway, I could easily knock it down to 60fps by enabling vsync, which limits the framerate to the monitors refresh rate. Since I have an LCD, with vsync turned on the highest it will go is 60fps since that's the limit of LCD's. However, the very fact I have both cards plugged in and enabled is enough to cause the overheating, regardless of how much stress the cards have, the power supply would need to supply both with electricity, which is where the problem is, my power supply was mislabeled and is much lower than the advertised 600watts.

Anyway, I could remove the second video card like I said, and suffer the stuttering, but it's kinda like trying to eat a Red Baron pizza when you have access to an Italian Restaurant.

I'm impressed with what you said about the PS3 version, but Oblivion on my PC with SLI runs so well its scary. The textures look superb to me, I don't see how they could get any better. SLI also gives you more shaders that the game itself doesn't even offer you. Basically, in the SLI configuration, you can force it to use more shaders than what is available in the Oblivion settings menu. Even better, I don't get any stuttering, anytime, anywhere. Everything is so freaking smooth its beautiful.

Another problem is that I don't have a PS3 or the money to get one. I probably would consider the PS3 version if I had the system, but its cheaper for me to buy the power supply than a PS3. Besides, the PC version is a perfect fit for me.

PC version also has user-created mods.

                        That's enough right there.

THIS is why the PC version is superior (although I played the hell out of the game on the 360).

With various graphical mods (especially the ones that make the faces look like normal people and not abominations), the PC version looks 1000x better than either 360 or PS3.
