I had kind of a crappy day.
So I just bought a new notebook off of Newegg. It's a pretty sweet system for my meager budget, with a 2.1 GHz Intel Dual Core, 3 gigs RAM, 250 gig HD, GeForce 8600M GT video card. After eagerly anticipating it, it arrived today.
So I get started with the usual new computer stuff, you know setting up the OS, getting rid of as much useless crap on the computer as possible, etc.
Finally I get ready to start installing programs. I insert a DVD. Nothing. The computer doesn't recognize a disc is inserted and I hear no sounds. The light on the drive flashes for a few seconds and then stops. I think, ok maybe I pushed the drive in wrong (my current notebook occasionally doesn't recognize discs).
So I eject the disc and push it again. Again, no joy. I get a little worried, but figure it might be the disc. I choose another disc. Again, nothing. Now I'm getting worried AND ******.
So I look for new drivers for the drive, uninstall the old ones and then install the new ones (with the requisite restarts of course). Still nothing.
At this point I think we all know where this is going.
Annoyed and resigned, I call up Acer tech support and talk to them. They talk me BACK through the unistall and reinstall driver bit which I humor him by doing it again. Nothing works. He tells me to talk to Newegg.
I call up Newegg. They tell me that while I can send it to them, they'd simply then send it to Acer, and then Acer would send it to them before Newegg would send it back. That could add 10 or more days to the whole proceeding.
I call Acer back up. They talk me through a regedit thing to try to fix it. But of course, it doesn't work. So I get them to set up a service ticket, and they tell me to send it in. But of course they hang up on me before it's done. So I have to call them again.
At this point I've probably spent just as much time talking to Acer and Newegg than I have playing with the computer.
In the end, I had to put my computer I've had all of 4 hours back into the box it came in and go to FedEx to pay, out of my own pocket, to send it back to Acer to get it fixed. Which means I won't see it for at least another 2 weeks.
The strange thing? I'm not yelling, I'm not screaming. I was really calm on the phone. Everybody I talked to even noted that. I think I'm just annoyed and depressed.
