    Anybody here use Linux?

My hard drive just shat out on me so I'm running my computer from a flash drive of mine using a Linux system called Puppy. Mostly I'm just wondering if anyone else has even heard of Puppy. http://www.puppylinux.com/

    Re: Anybody here use Linux?

I hope someone else responds to this thread, because I'm getting pretty damn close to replacing my PS3's hard drive, partitioning it, and installing Linux on it. I just bought a 250 gig laptop hard drive today (Western Digital), and I'll be installing it in the very near future. If anyone knows if mainstays like Mozilla, AIM, Yahoo Messenger, Soulseek, and Azureus are compatible with the operating system, please let me know. If there's next to nothing of use for me to run on Linux, I might not bother partitioning my hard drive after I install it. Thanks in advance, and sorry to slightly hijack this topic, alto, even though my queries are relevant to the topic at hand.

Well I think there is a new flavor of linux at least once a month so no I haven't heard of puppy, but I've heard of a couple of other run off CD versions, so run off USB would be the next step.

      As for your questions perversion.
Mozilla - Started on Linux to the best of my knowledge .
Aim/Yahoo - Pidgin (like trillian but uglier). Also GAIM for just AIM (maybe Yahoo as well don't remember).
Azareus - made in Java so yes, also bitorrent is very much in the spirit of Linux.
Soulseek I'm not sure of, but it's certainly possible there is a Linux version.

Just get ready for lots of command prompts, and depending on which flavor you go with, compile statements. So considering Linux is about the only thing which will run on PS3 (OS wise) I say go for it. The only thing you might lose is having to empty the partition later if you don't like it.

So Linux is ok, but has a fairly high learning curve, though simple things are still pretty simple to do on it. It just usually feels a bit clunkier than Windows or Mac, but usually makes up for it in customization potential. I never really got into it all that much, but it was good for programming C, and a lot of the flavors have come a long way in the UI department.

Have fun tracking down the dependencies for installing programs though. Depending on which version of Linux you get it can be a royal pain.
