    Better PC versus 360

I am planning on saving up money for one of these gadgets, mostly for gaming as I already have a laptop for schoolwork and such.

So I am wondering of the two what would pavilionites prefer?

As for games, both 360 and PC seem to get the same games, including Mass Effect, Bioshock, Oblivion, etc.

Not only that, but with a PC I can play a huge array of other games as well. Stuff like City of Heroes, which run OK on my laptop, yet aggrivate me to no end when I look at a game and realise I can't play it. Heck, I bought Star Trek: Legacy for $50 when it came out, only to realise how idiotic I was and didn't see it needed 128 VRAM (I only have 32 yet can run some 64 games quite well), still never have played it to this day.

Also with a PC there are free user-created mods and such. Which is a big plus. A lot of 360 games being ported to PC are FPS' anyhow which are far superior with mouse+keyboard in my opinion.

With the 360 it's cheaper. Bottom line. Especially with gaming and such versus a PC. It also gets the games a lot sooner than the PC does. However there are chances of RROD.

X-Box Live from what I understand of it, is a lot like Steam. Which Steam is a free service, while XBL costs money (not a whole lot, but more than the free Steam).

Although in the end it is likely that I will be stingy and save my money and be content with my Wii... But I wants to has a Oblivion/Mass Effect. Any discussion would be helpful!

PC by far, I got a 3.0gHZ with RAM upgraded to 1.5GB and a decent video card/other accessories for $400 and it plays nearly any game I throw at it pretty smoothly, plus you can upgrade it anytime you need to...unlike 360, which is just kinda there.

I've tested the limits of my fairly cheap PC just to see what it could do, Ive had Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 at its highest settings with only minimal lag, Ive had Civ4 run smoothly, and Life Stories on its highest setting run smooth, of course these dont compare to the higher end games but RCT3 uses up quite a bit of resources at times, especially zoomed out overlooking a vast network of rides and such all moving at the same time.

I need to dip about $200 into a decent video card

My laptop right now is at the 4-5 year range. I was thinking either another laptop or just building my own PC. Both are pretty expensive in the long run.

Id sell the laptop, and buy a desktop PC if you can. And for the love of god, just spring for an 8800GT Nvidia Video card. They are pretty cheap now, and they are godly video cards. They can run ANYTHING except for Crysis, but then nothing can.

Ive got a 3ghz core duo, 2gig ram, and used to have a 7300LE Nvidia card. I could barely run anything at medium settings without lots of lag. I dropped $200 on an 8800GT when they first came out. BAM. I can run EVERYTHING I have at maximum settings now.

I think 8800GT's are down to like $180 depending on where you look.

Well I am not selling my laptop. I still plan to do schoolwork and such on it. It's handy to have in class. Especially since I am a website developer major.

I'll look into that video card. (it's only 160 with a rebate on newegg) But it's the audio, HD, ram, desktop, motherboard, power supply, etc I have to consider as well. Which is why 360 is tempting, since it's extremely cheap in comparison.

            here's the deal:
many companies have said they're switching over to primary development on consoles because they're sick of piracy on the PC. I believe this includes Bioware. this means that a lot of the games that are ported to PC are going to be buggier or slower than their console counterparts (although the exact opposite is true with any Valve game).

I bought a 9600GT for $120 after rebate, and it's awesome. however, my room's like a furnace whenever I'm playing. and now I'm going to have to wait for stuff like GTA IV, Mass Effect, DMC 4...

I think it really comes down to what you prefer in games. PC of course has way more western games, so you have stuff like The Witcher instead of Blue Dragon or Lost Odyssey. just look at release dates of stuff and decide what you want.

BUY THE COMPUTER AND THEN BUY A 360 AND A PS3. WHAT THE HECK WHY NOT GET THE TWO PORTABLE SYSTEMS WHILE YOU'RE AT IT IF YOU ALREADY DON'T OWN THEM. NOW YOU'RE GONNA NEED A RICH LIBRARY OF GAMES TO GO WITH ALL THOSE SYSTEMS. BUT YOUR TV SUCKS. SO GO OUT AND BUY AN EXPENSIVE 1080P TV TO GO WITH ALL THAT. DON'T FORGET ALL THE CABLES. AND SELL ALL YOUR DVDS BECAUSE THEY'RE NOW OBSOLETE AND REPLACE THEM WITH BLU-RAY. IT'S THE WAVE OF THE FUTURE.

(In all seriousness just buy/upgrade the computer and then you'll knock that eventual purchase off the list and you can buy some 360 games you might've bought the system for while you're at it. Two birds in one stone and you'll save yourself some money.)

Ok, thanks everyone for your help. I ordered a brand-new computer. Weighed the pros and cons and had some help as well.
