Guess I should get the obvious thing out of the way first: if this article is accurate, they're trying to copy Rock Band, which just beat GH3's shorts off.
They'd be smart to try and work out something with RedOctane to make the peripherals work for both games (RB and GH), because no one is going to buy a second set of peripherals and most people who want Rock Band-like gameplay already have it.
I'm still not ready to hate on Guitar Hero, because I think they've done a good job with all three of their (main) games. I do think they need to either focus on making it a better GAME than RB by refining the note sets and such and including lots of songs, or make it a better EXPERIENCE than RB by making "missed notes" sound real, offering a choice of lots of different-sounding guitars to mess with, creating a big mod-content community, and/or incorporating a semi-game-like jam session sort of mode.
Still doesn't matter. When GH4 or whatever it's going to be called is released, how many people are going to say it's better than Rock Band?
Harmonix is made up of musicians. Activision has Neversoft, who are basically a bunch of guys who did nothing but make skating and Spider-Man games for the last ten years. That much was evident during GH3. Inaccurate, unrealistic charts; lazy application of hammer-ons/pull-offs; a lame Boss Battle feature; slapping sponsors all over the game.
And now in desperation they're doing what Harmonix had already thought of when the first GH got popular.
