    Computer problems

Ok, something has messed up my computer and I can't open up any windows but one. The taskbar isn't showing any other open files, and the only way I can get to them, is to go through taskmanager and bring them to the front.

And I can't access any flash or other web functions. Also my e-mail is messed up.

I usually would get a family member to wipe my computer, but sadly I don't have access to anyone, so I am stuck doing it myself. I haven't done it before, but I was wondering if there was a good guide outside of trying to figure out the manual to wipe and then reinstall my computer?

    Re: Computer problems

    What OS are you using?

If youre using XP run this, that should fix the taskbar thing.

Something altered your registry entries that tell the computer how to control the taskbar, if youve downloaded anything recently, it may have contained a virus or malicious coding.

As for the flash not opening just reinstall your internet browser so itll re-write all the registry entries

why not just download Adaware (free) and AVG free edition? There's probably a virus or some crap on your system.

I assumed Vonwert already had that.

Try SpyBot also, some 3rd party spyware contain malicious coding as well

I haven't done that program yet, but I have run spybot and avast anti-virus and while two virus came up, it didn't fix the problem.

I'll try what you suggested first.

            Re: Computer problems

Most computers now days have a restore partition. (If you bought your PC from a reseller). What kind of PC do you have? To tell if you have a restore partition, right click My Computer, click "Manage" and then go to Disk Management. Select your main hard drive, and how many partitions are there? If you have Windows XP, you'll likely have a restore partition anywhere from 4GB to 8GB, but only if the manufacturer put one on there. If you have one, you need to press a key combination during the POST screen when you start it up. If you don't have a restore partition, follow the next thing I'm about to say.

If you don't have a restore partition, look on your PC for a Windows XP certificate of authenticity, it should have your CD key on there. If you don't have an OEM version, you won't have that sticker, so use Magic Jellybean or Aida32 to find out what your Windows XP product key is.

Once you know what your product key is, use the same exact Windows CD to reinstall. (If you have the OEM version of XP Home, make sure you get the OEM XP Home CD for example). If you don't have a CD, borrow one from someone that does or ask them to copy theirs for you. (Which is fine if you have a valid Windows Product key). You'll more than likely need to call Microsoft after activating it if its an OEM CD, due to many manufacturers not matching the proper license key with the installation, but they'll help you out as long as its only on one PC.

Regarding downloading a different antivirus program, that may help but is not recommended in this case. Reason being, getting a virus on your PC is like your house catching on fire. You can put the fire out, but your house will never be the same. After you reinstall Windows, you should get Norton Antivirus or Internet Security so you're protected going forward.

Not in my experience. I've been using AVG for years, and it didn't kill any viruses that came in on my machine, so I switched to Norton and I've had no troubles. You must have had a weird bad experience or old definitions, because Norton is awesome. It's the most industry trusted antivirus solution for a reason.

the reason for that is because it's pre-installed on most computers.
just look at the extensive criticisms listed here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_antivirus

and in many reviews of their 2008 release, the reviewer notes that it finds many problems that it cannot fix, or flat out refuzes to fix, and that it has a hard time actually disinfecting computers from any viruses found.

                      it's ****.

Well the thing is, that I can't even download another program. So I think I'll try out what JLa said. I can't even copy and paste.

I wasn't referring to preinstalls. Every knowledgeable IT company or person I've ever worked with prefers Norton, and it's a very good product, and has never failed me or anyone I've ever known (Until now). My 7+ years of experience says otherwise, but you can believe whatever you want. Just keep in mind not a single person that has Norton has ever brought a computer to me to fix to remove viruses, and I've fixed hundreds. McAfee and AVG are the most common antivirus programs people have when they need my help removing viruses.

Let me know how that goes. I'm usually not on until in the very early mornings since I work second shift, I get home after midnight, so please be patient with me.

When I go into the Disk Manager, it says it is Unalbe to connect to Logical Disk Manager service. I guess I am screwed there.

Do you have an OEM version of Windows or one you bought from the store? If you have a Windows Sticker on your PC somewhere you likely have an OEM version. Your CD key should be on it, if it is, you can reinstall Windows (but you'll lose all the files/gamesaves/etc).

You'll need a Windows CD, and if you don't have one they are easy to get on bit torrent. (Since you have a legal CD key to prove you have genuine Windows, if you download a Windows CD and use the same key that's on the sticker on your computer, it's perfectly legitimate). Make sure you download a matching CD. (For example, if you have XP Home OEM, download the XP Home OEM CD).

That's all just assuming you have the sticker with the product key on it, I assume that because most people do unless they build their own PC's.

Note: For 75% of OEM Windows XP reinstalls, you'll have to call a 1-800 number for Microsoft to activate when you're finished.
