A Question For Chrono Trigger Experts

I never really liked Chrono Trigger much, but for some reason I'm feeling an overwhelming urge to give it another chance. I have the SNES and PSX versions.

Anyway I'm wondering if I should play the SNES or PSX version of the game. I know the PSX version has load times, and I'm okay with that (a big part of RPG's is patience, afterall) so please don't count the load times against it.

I guess what I want to know is other than the obvious, was the PSX version retranslated or changed in any way other than the cut scenes? Do they both have the same dialogue?

SNES is superior in every single possible way.

    Even impossible ways.

I know you say not to count load times, but I think it makes a bigger difference with CT than most. Most RPGs of that era have a separate battle screen, which already creates a disconnect between the field and the battles. Part of what made CT so amazing for its time was that it didn't have this disconnect, and everything was totally seamless.

So yeah, the load times pretty much ruin that. Even if you wouldn't normally care about load times, adding them to CT takes a lot more away from it than you might think.

Indeed. One of the greatest aspects of the game is how fast and fluid it is.

So I take it its the same translation in both?

You have a point there, but did any of the extras make up for it? I did play my PSX version a few times, and I really didn't mind the load times.

I guess I'll have to compare the too.

There is one benefit of the PSX version that's hard to ignore though, I just can't trust the save feature in SNES carts. I'm afraid my file would eventually get lost after a while. I haven't had that happen in PSX, but I know that the batteries in SNES carts don't last forever, although I've had more luck with SNES than NES.

I think the save thing is the main thing that makes the decision hard for me.

Even without considering load times Chrono Trigger just feels better on a SNES.

I've had the same New Game + file on my SNES cart since Day One.

              Since THE BEGINNING OF TIME

So I don't think you should worry about the saves.

And if you really wanna see the mediocre anime cutscenes in the PSX version there is YouTube.

i agree with magus in every way, including the impossible ways unmentioned.

the cart, if you have it, is the only way to play ct.

Thank you Ωbright for the sig fix!

Re: A Question For Chrono Trigger Experts

Well the first time I bought CT was back in 1997 and it had already lost its save capacity. I don't know what happened to that cart so I bought it again. I'm just scared. There are some carts I'm sure that are good to this day, and there are some that might not be.

I wish I could just buy a new battery and slap it in there to be sure.

I prefer the SNES version. Load times aside, there's no difference in dialogue(that I remember) or any extra dungeons or anything cool like that. The only real extras the PSX version has are the anime FMVs and the art galleries/music player. And the FMVs, you watch the FMV of stuff happening, then you watch the same thing happen again in-game. Kind of takes away from it a tad.

I enjoyed the Playstation version. It'll save you some bucks, so I say play it that way.

I'd stick with the SNES version. Aside from the irritating load times, the PSX version has some wonky sound effects for certain attacks/magic (ex: Ice 2) and screws up some of the sounds of the final boss. I'm sure there are other examples, I just can't remember the rest. It's a small gripe, but if you've played the original enough times you'll notice.
