    So... What IS Monster Hunter?

I've never played any Monster Hunter games and I'm wondering what it's about. Like.... What type of game is it, what system, how long of a game, and what are some of it's quirks?

Knowing more about the game will probably persuade me to go out and find a copy.

Just from a few hours of playing Freedom 2, I can say that it's difficult to learn everything all at once.

Well, then allow me to take babysteps. What type of a game is it?

It's akin to a single-player MMORPG experience with real-time combat.

You hunt down monsters. Carve dead monsters for raw materials used to get better weapons to hunt down stronger monsters. Repeat ad naseum. Combined a fussy camera/control system you've got yourself an award winning formula, Capcom.

The learning curves (or the constant power plateaus you find yourself stuck in with no way out in sight) are pretty brutal as well. But Gloomy loves it.

Now if I can just find a good one to play first...

MHF 1 and 2 are readily available. And you can get it on Amazon.com
if you can't find a copy in store.

            That's what I did.

So... Freedom 2, then? What system is that on?

And is it a must to play online if it has the function? I heard that MH was only fun if you could play it online.

Freedom 2 is on the PSP.

Playing online isn't a must, but it sure does help for more difficult quests/monsters.

Though, Freedom/2 only have Ad-Hoc, you can use other means to play
with other people over the net.

Re: So... What IS Monster Hunter?

The first MH on PS2 was the only one released outside Japan that had online play, and that's been shut down. So now playing online is only possible if you use outside methods like XLink Kai. Useful but certainly not necessary.

I was worried I'd be missing out if I didn't play online. Thankfully it's not officially implemented. I'll look into MHF2.

Xlink Kai won't work if you have a stand alone wireless router.

Or a USB Wireless dongle thingy practically made for X-Link Kai.

Not true, works for me. I have my standard cable modem, and the wireless router, and while it takes some work to figure out how to configure it, it works just fine.

Not according to the XLink Kai boards.
