So this is my fifth year with the violin, and we're working on vibrato. My instructor was a tad bit vague (Since there are so many people he has to teach at once) as to how the motion really goes. So my question to you, fellow violinists, is this: When I vibrato, am I shaking my hand towards me, or more parallel to the bridge?

Re: Violin Vibrato
it's towards and away from you, not parallel to the bridge. what vibrato is doing is actually lengthening and shortening the amount of string that is sounding rapidly, so it vibrates (hence the name) in pitch.
vibrato for me is a combination of a lot of movement from the wrist, a little from the finger. it'll take you a while to get used to it.
also, this movement is not in any way analogous to self-pleasure.
ok, a little
