    Play time

So every game people talk about how it takes X hours to complete. Who is the standard for these estimates? Because I never finish any game anywhere CLOSE to the hours they give. If I finish at all. Take for instance Assassin's Creed DS which IGN's reviewer said he finished in a couple hours. I played that game for days and wasn't even halfway through. The Prince of Persia games each took me about two weeks but are supposed to be under 10 hours or whatever. Apparently it's takes me over a day per hour of actual play time. Am I just crap at games?

No, i always take my time with games. Certain games its because I dont want to be surprised, so like in FPS like Resistance, i advance VERY slowly. I know people who could have probably beat the game 3 times over in the time i have played, and i'm not even at the final level yet.

I really need to finish that before R2 comes out later this year...

I think the reviewers also might use walkthroughs and play straight through in one play.

Yeah, usually the reviewers will go through the game as fast as they can, but will try to get some of the extras of the game in if they can. Offical reviewers, that is.

This guy at the pawn shop told me when he first bought DQ8, he completed the whole game, secrets and all, without a walkthrough in 30hrs.

              Re: Play time

I only really care about play time when it comes to RPGs, since most of them have, like, a game clock that keeps track of it.

Of course, it's not always accurate. I'm clocked at 103 hours on Persona 3, but a lot of that time was spent idle while I was on the computer.

On the other hand, factor in all the times I died, and I guess it evens out.

I seriously didn't expect to spend all this time on this game.

              I never do...

It depends on the game, if I actually own it (renting/borrowing/at a friends place), and the genre.

If its a sequel to a game I already played I'll soar through it pretty quickly (Ratchet games). If its a game I know is loaded with secrets that I won't be able to come back for (GoW, and some FF secrets) then I take my time and try to find everything.

I was playing Quake 4 at my buddies house and was going through that pretty fast. I don't know if there are any secrets to be found there though, besides the ocassional hidden stash of supplies (medpacs, ammo and the like).

Reviewers typically recieve a document about the game when they recieve the game from a company that outlines different things about the game. and sometimes, yes, a basic walkthrough.
