    I'm (Finally!) goin' Next-Gen!

I'm starting to get very jealous of all the people with Next-Gen gaming stuff so I decided I'm gonna buy a DS. From the looks of things (General Prices on Ebay) I can sell my old SP to the local pawn shop for around 60$ bucks with a little bit of bargaining. Then I just have to raise another 60$ bucks...

But then I obviously wanna buy a game with it (That's another 15-20$ bucks) so what game do you guys suggest as a first game? I was thinking Animal Crossing or something like that...

Oh and I probably wanna buy one of those "Accessory kits" so if you suggest I do buy it, that's another 15-30$ Bucks...

EDIT: Or do you guys suggest selling the Gamecube and getting a Wii?

It would take me pretty long to save up for both at the same time so for now I'm stickin' with just one lol...

The DS was released in November 2004, not really next-gen.. PSP is more next gen since it was released March 2005...

Consoles are where its at, get a Wii, you'll end up paying about the same either way, give or take $50, and itll be around a lot longer then the DS or the PSP...Im not one for buying stuff of the internetz, Ive had issues quite a bit before with it, so if I buy anything itll be new from a retailer.

The DS is only about $130, the Wii is around $250, so it's about $120 more, not $50 more, and since their hard to find in stores you might have to pay more online.

I actually have to say DS first. Only because it's cheaper.

I have some DS games I could sell you cheap. Animal Crossing is one of them.

He said he wanted a game and an accessory kit for it also, which comes out to almost $50 depending on what you get, so that drops it down to $70...The Wii comes with a game, and the VC games for the wii are cheap and the actual Wii games are comparable to other console games, so in the long run hes better off saving the other $70 to get a Wii because theyll stop selling games for DS and PSP long before Wii does.

And what crystal ball are you looking in to foresee this? The DS has sold SO many units in both Japan and America that I don't see games stopping being made for it anytime in the next 3-4 years, at least. The Wii is a hard-to-find novelty right now, but it'll go the Gamecube route once its more readily available.

I dont know about portables, but it seems the average lifetime for a console is 5-7 years, the DS was released in late 2004, so itll probably die out by or around 2010 in favor of a more powerful nintendo portable, its inevitable one will come out, just when it will.(I dont keep up with portables, so I dont know if ones actually in the works yet or not)

Its not a prediction Perv, its an opinion on what I think will happen.

If it was an opinion, you would have said, "I think they'll stop..." or "I believe they'll stop..." In saying, "they'll stop..." meaning, it's in the future, you ARE making a prediction. Not like it matters. I predicted right after you that the Wii will die within a few years, anyway.

That 5-7 years is barely accurate, anyway. The original Xbox only lasted 4 years (2001 to 2005), and the Gamecube barely lasted 5 (the only thing that kept it from dying when the Xbox did was the pending release of Twilight Princess). Sony has publicly stated that their systems will have a life of 10 years, which, looking at the PS1, and the PS2 (so far), that's probably pretty accurate. Also, the original Gameboy (through its original, GBC, and the smaller redesigns) had a life of about (if not more than) ten years.

                      So, yeah.

Portables don't really run on a regular cycle because Nintendo's basically been running the show with almost no competition. DS will be there until Nintendo decides to bring something new along and judging by their track record it'll be a new version of DS before they move onto a whole different unit. As long as it's setting on the top of the charts most months it's not going anywhere. DS Lite came out just over two years ago. And PSP2K just came out last year.

And like Perv said the 5-7 year cycle is how long it takes for a new console to come out but the old ones still get new games for a few years beyond that.

Yeah, nintendo owns the portable market, so they'll release a new system only when they feel like. despite the existence of the PSP, and it's success, it offers no competition to the DS.

Quick, someone sue Nintendo for having a monopoly!

Not necessarily. While it's been lagging behind for about three years, ever since Crisis Core's JP release the Japanese market finally recognized how the PSP was the ideal handheld for console-caliber RPGs, and its sales have been fairly impressive, even beating out the Wii and DS last week.

Though this doesn't necessarily apply to the US market, they're gaining a hell of a lot of ground in their homeland. Regardless of the gap in the installed base, the PSP is most certainly fairly significant, if not serious, competition for the DS.
