Lucky you! Two threads in one day!

Okay, this is a question that's been nagging at me for a while. There are those evil masterminds that have henchmen (like in a James Bond movie). I've always wondered, where do they come from? (I mean, besides their parents).

Do bad guys put out a want ad, or seek people with low self-esteem, or something?

I always imagined them to be a mix of mercenary/mafia types, depending on the type of mastermind. Sometimes, they are military figures.

Like in Die Hard with a Vengeance, they're a bunch of military insurgents with their leader being the brains behind the operation.

Criminal gangland mastermind types, though, that's all street gangs and stuff.

I always figured henchmen were like retired or ex-military guys. You know, Soldiers of fortune, mercenaries etc. There are a lot of people in the real world who do this, like Black Water or Dale Gribble.

I would imagine they are given birth by whoever is writing the show or movie.
