The Smiths song you mention above is one of my favorites by them as well. First heard it many, many years ago on Louder than Bombs, and then a few years later realized there was a cover version in Ferris Bueller's Day Off in the scene in the Art Institute.

The Godspeed...song is also good, but I prefer East Hastings (a song that was used as a centerpiece years later in 28 Days Later). That song, to me, epitomizes Godspeed's style. It's slow, wistful, really gorgeous.....and then builds up to an amazing crescendo that always gets me all tensed up every time I hear it. It's probably in my top 20 songs of all time.

As for certain moods, if I am in a contemplative/melancholy/wistful/bittersweet mood (bordering on depressed....even though I've not been able to get depressed for a good number of years now), I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS listen to Mazzy Star, usually the album Among My Swan (which does NOT include their "big hit" Fade into You). Top to bottom, that album is my favorite of theirs, even though one of my favorite songs (Into Dust....really bleak) is on the album before.

Speaking of bleak, if I want to listen to music that's almost unbearably bleak (which I do occasionally), I pop in some Labradford (their first two albums...Prazision and A Stable Reference epitomize this).

If I'm in the mood to listen to something really beautiful and sad, I listen to either of Low's first two albums (Long Division or I Could Live in Hope).

If I'm in the mood to listen to something really beautiful and haunting, I listen to some mid-period Dead Can Dance.

If I want to listen to something aggressive (which is rare), I'll listen to Ministry's Psalm 69 album.

If I want to listen to something mellow, aggressive, fast, and slow all in one, I listen to Smashing Pumpkins' Gish album.

Other albums I listen to based on mood are Joy Division (bleak), Atari Teenage Riot (aggressive), Nick Drake (slow, pretty, pastoral, and mournful).....

Damn...I think I'll just stop here.

Nervous and Worried, needing to Calm Down and Gain Composure: Escaflowne Soundtrack - Memory of Fanelia

I listened to this song five or six times in a row the night I printed out my manuscript for the first time and gave it to a co-worker to read. I was FREAKING THE **** OUT about someone reading a full novel written by me and possibly not liking it, so I listened to Memory of Fanelia until I calmed down.
