    Characters (updated 9-7) READ FOURTH

    Characters

    Lucid (named by Obright)
    25 years old

    Type: Arbiter
    Primary Color: White
    Secondary Color: Blue

    After class change failure:

    Type: Unknown
    Primary Color: White
Secondary Color: Orange, covered by Blue paint.

He's a dreamer. He views the world through rose-tinted glasses. To him, nothing is ever as bad as it seems, and everyone just needs to relax and enjoy life. He is jokingly called a hippie by the older Angels because of his easygoing, relaxed personality. He has no idea what the term means. His world views makes him fairly bad at his job, as he doesnt treat any issues with the urgency they sometimes deserve.

Lucid is easily intimidated, and can be reduced to a rambling mess if under stress. He never thinks about what he's going to say in any situation, instead trying to make his speech sound better while it's coming out of his mouth. He ends up correcting himself, repeating sentences with slight changes, and answering simple questions several times until he finds a word he thinks fits properly. So if you ask him a Yes or No question, he may reply "Yeah, okay, yes. yeah. of course. yes". He also has a lot of difficulty when expected to give any information about himself or how he feels about a situation. He may get confrontational, or even leave the room rather than give an answer. it's not because he has any secrets, its just he believes that if he answers the things most people (like Megan) ask him about, it would make people focus on the differences between them, rather than thinking of him as an equal.

Lucid has made a few physical modifications to his armor. These include removing his visor, trimming his shoulder armor, and grinding down most sharp edges. This is a relatively common trend with the younger generation, influenced by human culture to be more individual, and stand out from the crowd. This is an endless source of frustration with the human population, since the Angels who modify themselves like this don't look anything like the Angels of the previous generation, and it can be hard to tell their class types at younger ages.

    Megan
22 years old, slender build, with shoulder length light brown hair. Dresses in a relaxed style, typically loose-fitting clothes (t-shirts, tank tops, jeans, stuff like that). doesnt put a lot of effort into her appearance with fancy hair styles or cosmetics. She has a very distant relationship with her parents even though she still lives in their house. Moving out scares her, because she hates being alone, even though she cannot stand the people she lives with. The few friends she ever had left when she was a child when their parents moved away.

Megan, like most people, has always been curious about the Angels, and bombarded Lucid with endless, repetitive questions about himself and his species when she was younger. Lucid got her to stop by telling her that there was a death penalty for revealing any information to a human, which Megan later discovered to be a lie with help from another angel.

After Lucid heals from his failed class change and they leave town, her fears of being alone become very problematic. Lucid has to leave her alone frequently to steal supplies from the angel's warehouses, hunt for food, and scouts new areas as they travel. Despite being crippled by these fears on a near-daily basis, she refuses to head back home, and deal with living in her house with parents she doesnt care for, and know that Lucid would never again "rescue" her. He's the only "person" she really has left in her life, and she can't afford to lose him.

    Interaction between Megan and Lucid

Megan met Lucid when she was 12, while having a fight with her father (a frequent occurance) that he interrupted. Lucid wasnt a very effective conflict mediator in those days, and his method of ending the fight was to run in the house, pick Megan up, and run out of the house with her. They became friends that day, and Lucid is still prone to interrupting arguments by abruptly reaching into the house and carrying Megan away. Her parents aren't big fans of Lucid because of this, and Lucid doesnt realize that he's making things much worse by ending the conflicts in such a way. He knows he's supposed to let them work things out for themselves most of the time, or step in and act as an unbiased mediator unless things escalate to a dangerous level, but Megan's appreciation of him performing these rescues only encourages him to break protocol again and again.

Megan fancies herself a bit of an artist, and has painted numerous decorations on Lucid's armor, which he proudly shows off every chance he gets. None of the other Angels he knows have ever been used as a human's canvas, after all.

    Secondary Characters
The following profiles leave much out, since how you meet them and how you learn about their personalities is a major story element.

    Erica
    27 years old.
Erica was sentenced to be exiled to an errant zone for an unknown crime, and she managed to escape from her escort. she has been on the run for several weeks when Lucid and Megan encounter her. She doesnt trust Angels, but is okay with Lucid since he quite obviously doesnt revel in his authority/superiority like most of his kind that she has encountered in the past.

Erica is very confrontational, and quick to anger. This, combined with the extreme paranoia that developed while she was on the run, makes her pretty much the worst person ever to travel with. She panics when Lucid leaves to go get supplies, and this doesnt mix well with Megan's fears of abandonment. The two girls fight often, despite claiming to be very good friends.

    Raya
    26 years old

    Type: Arbiter
    Primary Color: White
    Secondary Color: Green

The first female angel Lucid has ever met. She is from the same newer generation as Lucid, but not social with humans outside of her job duties. When she does interact with humans, she almost always talks down to them, which includes simplifying what she's saying to make sure they can understand her. She always speaks with a loud, clear voice, with very little tone change. This way of speaking coupled with the distortion from the mouth plate she never removes makes her quite intimidating. She follows all orders without question, and has no known hobbies or interests outside of her job. She has made no modifications to her armor.

    Character Sprites

This is one of Megan's main outfits in the game. denim shorts, tube top, and an open shirt. reflects her relaxed personality (while around friends) pretty well. Why is she dressed like that? She lives in southern Alabama, and the game starts in early summer, that's why. This being one of her main outfits, there are a lot of variations of it.

This is what Erica looks like when Lucid and Megan first meet her. She's been on her own for quite a while at this point, and she's still wearing the prisoner's clothes from when she escaped from her captor on her way to be exiled.

After she joins up with Lucid and Megan, Erica ends up looking like this. All her outfits are fairly "girly", which contrast well with Megan's tomboy appearance.

Lucid's main sprite next to Megan's, so you can see the height difference. This is a revised design. This is the way Lucid looks after he's healed up and regenerated his armor after rejecting his overseer class change.

Raya's final sprite is on the left, and her earlier sprite is on the right. The armor design is unchanged, but the entire body frame was redrawn to look more feminine, as her original sprite looked like a man with an oddly shaped rack, because I sucked at making sprites back then.

One note about the angel sprites: females don't have compression tanks (filled with water for cooling purposes, or air for floating or underwater use) in their chest armor like the males do, rather they have the tanks relocated to their hips.

I still love the characters you have so far.

One question though, when Lucid breaks off parts of his armor, does that limit the things he would normally be able to do as an angel? I think it's cool that he already has some things in common with people, being the first Earth-bound generation born, and the fact that, like humans, he's kept in the dark about a lot of things. I think it would be cool if it say, made him unable to submerge underwater or something. I suspect part of the reason why he did it was to be more human anyway, but I could totally be barking up the wrong tree again.

Also, I didn't know you could draw!

    Damn.

Lucid does lose some abilities by breaking off his armor. The plate that once covered his eyes and forehead made seeing in the dark possible (think night vision) and it's removal pretty much forced him to add the flash light. He removed it because it was tinted, and he couldnt see things the way they really were.

His air supply isnt lessened at all beacuse of his "modifications", because he has avoided breaking any parts of the armor on his body. He doesnt want to risk losing his swimming abilities, as it's one of his favorite activities. he doesnt use his air reserve to breathe under water, he uses it exclusively to float.

Most of the changes made were to make it more comfortable, and easier to interact with others. for example, the shoulder armor made it impossible for him to lay on his side, so off it came.

The armor is typically removed using the few remaining tools that were used during construction of the towers, since the armor is made out of the same material (he mostly used special hammers, as none of the old saws were available in his area. but most DO use saws, rather than hit themselves with massive hammers). Lucid discovered that the Towers are actually stronger than the armor, and rubbed the broken areas of his armor against the tower to smooth the jagged breakage points. like a really big nail file. Megan then painted these areas so it no longer showed signs of being broken. No consideration was given to the scratches all over the tower.

I like it. It's very megaman/transformers-esque but I like it. It reflects your likes.

And the spriting's way better than I could do.

The "Angels" originally had a very different look. I had to change a lot just to get them to translate well into RPG Maker XP, and they ended up looking a bit generic because of it.

This is the first concept design I did for them. I was really trying to emphasize the whole "their armor grows out of their bodies" thing, while still looking like armor rather than insectoid or something like that. this design just cannot be turned into a sprite usable by RPG Maker XP. I would need a much higher resolution.

that's not to say I don't like the designs I'm using, they just arent the ones I wanted. I had to go with what works.

            That looks cool.

Conceptual sketches hardly ever wind up looking like the end result, so you're not alone in that. They almost always have to change for one reason or another. It seems that even major productions have to deal with limitations, and have to compromise something.

Still it's all part of the process, and your present sprites might not look as badass as they do now if you hadn't had those original ideas, even though it might seem like a shame to have to divert from them.

              heh heh...

              old habits die hard.

I redesigned Lucid again today. the sprite above just ended up looking to cutesy for my tastes. his portrait picture has also been revised.

Other than redoing Raya's portrait picture, I havent messed with any of the other Angel designs. This was more of a case of me needing to make Lucid match the others.

what I have so far. on left is the previous version, right is the new version.

I really, really love the new design, and I'm taking my time making it into a sprite. there will NOT be a revision after this. I like the redesign that much. it should also animate and emote much better.

this wont be a big setback. I intentionally delayed doing lucid's other sprite sheets in case something like this happened.

I agree. The new version looks very cool. I especially like the modification just above the eyes.

Yup. I'll post it when I post the finished sprite.

finished Lucid's new main sprite sheet today. now on to the animations. my index finger is sooooo tired.

                        vs.

As you can see, only the chest was 100% redesigned. the head, arms, and legs mostly just had elements moved around or streamlined.

I'll get that design sketch up here tomorrow.

I can't find that sketch. been looking. can't.

I'm gonna start showing something at least once a week until the game is finished.

I'll start off with a little height comparison between three characters. Raya, Lucid, and Megan.

Raya, being an Arbiter like Lucid was before his failed class change, is roughly 11 feet tall. Lucid is 8 feet tall, and Megan is about 5'6". An Angel's armor is not factored into my height measurements. Raya loses 3 pixels off the top of her head with her helmet off. I'm not sure how much Lucid will lose, as I have yet to make any sprites of his new design with his armor off.

                            Some stuff about Raya's design:

Raya takes her job very seriously, and never bothers forming personal connections with the people she serves. She never removes her face guard around humans or strangers. Her eyes aren't as bright as Lucid's because like most angels, she has a visor over her eyes that has the side-effect of darkening them. She hasnt made any modifications to her armor.

Like all female Angels, she features two external air tanks on her hips, in addition to the ones in her shoulders, forearms, and boots. Females don't have as much room in their upper body armor for air tanks, like the males do.

On each arm, Raya has a basic tool kit, that includes things like screwdrivers, a small knife, scissors, and other stuff that one might randomly need through the day.

                              Found the design sketch.

the ony things I drew before making the sprite were the head and body. didnt bother with legs or arms.

you can see a leg from a previously erased design where lucid's shoulder is.
