    Mario Kart Wii

Big news today! Big enough to get me interested!!!

    http://kotaku.com/368463/no-snaking-for-mario-kart-wii

    NO SNAKING.

This is enough of a paradigm shift for me to actually be interested in the series again.

i heard they were changing the way powersliding works. i guess it took people a little while to figure out that that meant no snaking

Bah, what next? Are they going to re-impliment the rubberband mechanics of Mario Kart 64 as well?

I'd like to have some kind of system in the game that rewards skilled players with some kind of an advantage, rather than have another Mario Party style game for stupid babies that anyone can win with good item drops.

i never had any problem winning a straight up race against normal people without the use of this technique which i didn't even know existed until recently.

if you're skilled, you'll know the tracks, how to dodge, recover, and how use your items effectively. a master of several game skills, not just one "super" technique

Against people that are really bad at Mario Kart DS and do not have courses memorized, it is very easy to win. Against people that have rudimentary skill, races tend to have a very random outcome, especially in 4 player matches where whoever is in last place will constantly recieve blue shell and 3 red shell items they can fire away at will.

All I'm saying is that Mario Kart 64 is easily the worst game in the series, and by stripping away the layers that they've added to the series since to improve it; we'll more than likely wind up with a similarly poor installment; unless, against all odds they can somehow find a way to re-balance the game in a different manner that will simultaniously satisfy both competetive and casual players.

              Re: Mario Kart Wii

That's the best we can hope for. Mario games have are usually random as hell in terms of competition, anyway.

And I thought the reason Mario Kart 64 wasn't so great was because it was ugly and the courses were at once huge and flat.

Wait, this is out next month? Jesus, we just got Brawl. I don't need any more video games for, like, a year.

                    Re: Mario Kart Wii

i thought snaking was something that was, at least in theory(i never saw it done), possible in mk64. this would be REMOVING something from that most hated game that has stuck with the series since

racing isnt about rapidly hitting left and right on a d-pad as fast as possible.

Not rapidly, you have to time them out...but still...

...and I have to agree w/ Jeff about the randomness issue. Sure, there can be some of the race atributed to luck, but sometimes it's just taken too far.

I always disconnected from a MK DS game when I saw someone snaking.

Maybe now I won't have to do that as much.
                          ...and that's why.

No snaking is great. If everyone could snake it would be EXACTLY the same as if everyone can't.

Honestly, snaking left 2/3rds of the game unplayed. Why play Mario in the Vacuum Kart while Toad in thye Egg Kart is 1000x better at snaking.

Items are usually ignored by snakers.

Half the tracks are ignored by snakers.

I mean, it's like playing Super Smash Brothers and saying "fox only, no items, final destination". Which is fine in then-thousand dollar tounrys. But on random online it isn't.
