    Hito's Game Idea

Alrighty, first off please read my Area Effect Battle System thread or this won't make a lick of sense.
Long story short - now that the pav supports the PC RPGM's, I figured I should get one. I'm still not sure whether I should get XP or VX - that's one of my questions here, actually. Anyway, since the unit types and conditions are not generalized but from my specific game idea, I figure I should post a bit about what that idea is.

It's in a fantasy world - but a fantasy world without the standard "fodder", if you will. Random bandits and the ilk are not around. That is because of the Alareckian Explosion - an intense surge of magick that covered the land. It's origins as of now are a secret, because there's no one who can handle the outpouring of magic to explore.

The Alareckian Explosion killed most life on the planet. But there were a few areas where it did not. In the Elmargei Mountains, it mixed with the material known as Tarite and became Bright magick, which served to weather the storm. Those who held the Talrite were not only safe, but over time, became Bright, and able to harness the magick themselves. And - though this discovery came only with terrible incidents - if Talrite was ingested in excessive amounts, it would poison the mind, but the body would serve on as a Tarack, someone who could amp magick.

A government was eventually formed, the Radian Counsel, and they quickly banned the creation of Tarack's, although they used the existing ones to great effect. They could form spirit wells which served to permenantly change the latent High Magick into Bright Magick, allowing the Radian people (who had already became Bright as a whole) to venture down from the mountains without requiring Tarite of their own. Civilization slowly returned.

But there was a dark zone. As they began to move westward they noticed that people would die before a Spirit Well could be formed - and those who held Tarite seems to die more often, not less. Eventually, a large expedition party with those proficient with Bright Magick and a slew of Taracks went deep into the afflicted territory...and they found the Korians.

The Korians were saved by another fluke of magick. Being a warrior culture before the Alareckian Explosion, they had a single mass grave for all of their dead. The magick had mixed with this and formed Dark Magick. By consuming the grave dirt, the Korians had survived - and, unlike the new Radians, kept their government.

While the Radians felt that the Korians were the "bad guys" for eating grave dirt to survive, there was no doubting the advantage of Kori's long-lived military dictatorship over the new, hesitant Radian Counsel. Still, with the Taracks, Bright could push back Dark. While the Korians could form energy wells as well, it was a simple matter for the Taracks to push forward. That is, until the Korian weapon was unleashed - Astral. A brief flash of stars - and then you were dead. Only a few had managed to live after the attack, and they described it as a sudden freezing of time that did not affect the Korians.

And here the war stands. Not good versus evil, for it's common knowledge that both sides are nothing more than desperate survivors trying to make the world habitable for themselves. Occasionally, diplomats from Radius or Kori are sent wearing a Black Skull or Pure Tarite, respectively, to avoid being harmed in the enemy element and to thus for peace. While these diplomats are not killed, the discussion is fruitless. Permanent energy wells are scattered across the world, and the matter is simply whether they radiate Bright or Dark. Huge campaigns are mounted to get to the well and switch it's affinity- and when that happens, countless civilians are drained within moments, while the conquering side has a new gain.

A battle grounded in survival but ultimately pointless. And peace is important now more than ever...for other creatures warped by the Alareackian Explosion are stirring...

    Cast of Opening Characters

    Amelia. Female Radian Knight. [BRIGHT]
Amelia is the typical Radian knight - a civilian drafted by the intense patriotism of the Radian Council. Her inner fire has inspired her to train constantly. He thinks that she can fight, without a Callers aid, as well as ten regular soldiers - and she's half as good as she thinks she is.

    Rorick. Male Radian Caller. [BRIGHT]
Rorick is, more than anything else, a healer at heart. In fact, he wanted to be a doctor - but when he discovered his talent at calling he reluctantly joined the Radian Knights. His Bright calling abilities are often more focused on healing than destroying darkness - not a common find. However, his normal apathy is not with regards to demons - against them, he is more crazed than even Amelia.

    Shenir. Male human.[BRIGHT]
Found in the Lazmont caves by Rorick and Amelia during the Second Defense of Lazmont. He has an odd complexion, and says very little.

    Pocorin. Male Korian Lancer. [DARK]
While Pocorin dons the Twilight Armaments and wields a Lanceblade, he is not a true Korian Lancer in that he cannot use the power of Astral. This infuriates him to no end and he often endangers his unit more than he should.

    Malfcient. Demon. [???]
Malfcient is, by his looks, a demon - but unlike any demons of legend. While they are rumored to be connected with Dys, the opposite of the High Magick of the Alareckian Explosion, he appears to be Dark in nature. It's apparent, though, that Malfcient hides many things.

    Allerio. Male Radian Commander. [CRUSADER]
Recently, it's been noted that those who spend a lot of time on the front lines develop an immunity to the opposing element (though they are not healed by it.) Allerio is one of these, a pragmatic commander who uses his skill and immunity to perform daring raids in Korian territory.

Sounds pretty decent, but what does it mean to be bright? Does it change you somehow? If so, is the change noticable? The Talrite, is it a stone or what? Do the Tarack morph in some way, or are they just like normal humans, but with the power of magic?

It sounds like a good start HIto, but you used a lot of words that we don't know what are, or mean. That hinders our ability to fully understand the game at this point. I understand if you're waiting because it could be a spoiler, though. At any rate I really like the name Radian Counsel.

A bit more detail would help a lot in our, or at least my understanding of your game idea.

Promised story extension is delivered, and characters from the opening act added.

      To answer your questions, Lausen-
      • Being Bright changes you on the fundamental level, making you receptive to magic instead of just being torn apart by it (which is what happened to most people due to the Alareckian Explosion.) It doesn't noticeably change you; however, seeing as most of the worlds population came from either the Elmargei mountains or from pre-explosion Kori, the difference is fairly noticeable. While occasionally there are people like Shenir who look different entirely, it's generally pretty easy to tell.
      • Talrite is a crystal stone with a low melting point, which allows it to be purified through heat and pressure.
      • Being a Tarack changes you immensely. It's basically like being a zombie. The skin liquefies, but is attracted to the energy, so you get these hazy outlines of people that perpetually glow.

Now that the rest of the opening story has been posted, ask me if you have any questions still.

Way to put the Light and Dark conflict into... I don't know what, really. I'm glad the Dark side isn't completely evil... at least, I hope they aren't.

How many other creatures survived the explosion, by the way? I hope it wasn't a total ecological collapse... I'm assuming everything in the protected areas survived. Also, I have to wonder, if two areas relatively close to each other weathered the explosion, might there by other colonies out there as well on the planet, trying to survive?

Also, I still have yet to find out why Light and Darkness fight so much in our culture, but then again, Light is to Darkness as Heat is to Cold. There aren't many things that have a real rivalry like that.

Nope. Bright and Dark are just two perspectives on the same idea of survival, no good or evil. Now, Demons are plain old "evil" - they are entropy, basically. They strive to end energy - that's what Dys is. Anti-energy, in a very different sense from Mal. It's hard to explain...Mal is surviving by bending energy into a new form. Dys is taking the energy of life and spirit and just snuffing it out. Not using it.

Basically all carnivores died. It's biological magnification - they got even more of the accumulated magic. Omnivores had mixed fates- they had to have enough inherent spirit to adapt to what is, basically, a struggle for existence like never before. There are a few animals that are elementally aligned (the Bright, hybrid goat/wolves called "Laurgs" will be making an appearance if I can suitably modify a sprite. Same goes for the Korian bone worms, which eat the dead people and thus became Dark very easily.) In the few areas where there is no prevailing affinity and no High Magick, you'll see a lot of unmagic creatures that were never affected. But generally it's plants and simple herbivores, as omnivores are generally too complex. Basically, as creatures get smarter, more adapted, etc., they become more receptive to Spirit. It's a split curve - the traits most likely to survive were either the herbivores that were basically Spirit dead, or the omnivores so Spirited they could benefit from Talrite / Korian grave dirt.

And the colonies question...look at the Unit Type list in the other topic and answer it for yourself.

And remember, it's Bright and Dark, not light and dark. Seems small, but I'm pointing out that they are just names for the two sides. It could be Cat and Dog, but that doesn't have quite the dramatic effect. If you haven't noticed, the naming conventions and such are from a Radian bias. That's because the Korians came into this with a longstanding isolationist culture. Radians have nothing binding them together, so they rely on propaganda. That's why I chose to show this from a Radian PoV. Of course, the Korians are obviously playing an equally important role - but as the plot involves mysteries of their culture, it makes more sense for you to learn alongside the Radian protagonists, Amelia and Rorick.

Gah, I should have known that. Aside from taking a closer look at the names, of course.

It bugs me because I myself concluded (a while ago, apparently) that bright is the linguistic opposite of dark, and is therefore more appropriate than "Light energy."

            So, got that cleared up.

So carnivores die, but flesh-eating scavengers prosper? Or is that because the carnivores ate animals that had been "contaminated", so to speak, while still living?

              Re: Hito's Game Idea

All carnivores AND scavengers died - except for one specific scavenger who eats from the Korian bone pit where Dark energy first condensed and formed. If that same breed of worm was somewhere else, it died. But while most animals ate and got an influx of High Magick, which will kill you pretty quickly, these animals got an influx of Dark Magick, which the body can adjust too. Thats why Crusaders and Shadowbringers are coming into play so quickly - because the body can change to accept Bright and/or Dark energy, in a way that's impossible for High Magick. Same goes for Laurgs - they were already evolved to fit life on the mountain, and when High Magick fused with Talrite to make Bright magick, many animals were saved. Unlike the Korian bone pits, there were probably a ton of Bright animals that evolved on the Elmargei mountains - but the Laurgs were the best and ate the rest. xD

I really like this storyline, Hito! It felt like I was reading a professional game preview It reminds me of my own way of thinking: that there is no good or evil, only decisions and consequences
Without darkness, how would you know there is light?
