I kind of hate it. Everything is built to encourage SUPER FRIGGING SPEED: speed booster things on the floor, springs that send you flying at every angle, "gimmicks" in every level, like jet boards and hang gliders, that usually result in speed boosts, and even a BUTTON that makes you go faster. The levels encourage this by having corkscrews all over the place, grind rails, and even wall/ceiling running. Never before has a Sonic game been so exhilirating and disorienting.
So why are the levels COVERED in bottomless pits? Bottomless pits that require ultra-slow precision to navigate, bottomless pits presented without warning, bottomless pits that look like you're supposed to jump down them to progress. This game punishes the player for every single misstep, but most importantly, it punishes the player for trying to move quickly.
I just played through Sonic 3 and Knuckles again and died maybe three times during the whole game. Every single one of those deaths could have been avoided; they were always the fault of my own reflexes or lack of attention. I've died dozens upon dozens of times now in Sonic Rush, and at most, two or three of those deaths felt like my own doing. All the rest were cheap, cheap, cheap.
Seriously, **** this game right in the ***.
