Holy-Chaos: Big Decision ( Need Opinions)

Now that the story is done I need to concentrate on splitting the slots evenly and deleting a lot of events. What I did was copied the first slot when it got to around 98% and then deleted the beginning events. I made the end right off of that. Now I need to go back and fourth deleting the beginning events on the one slot and the end events on the second.

The thing is I’m starting to doubt my space. I had the thought of completely abandoning random encounters. You would then only have to fight the boss characters and a few event fights. This would save me a bunch of space because I wouldn’t have to make a bunch of monsters. I also could concentrate on making each battle more strategic. I wouldn’t have to make as much weapons and armor either, though there would still be some.

With the extra space I could add more chests/NPC’s/Possible side quests/ etc… The only thing is I would have to change a lot of my other plans. I think this way might be worth the changes though.

So I was wondering your opinions on this matter? Should I try to go with my original plans or should I abandon the RE's and try to make everything more detailed and focus on the story and the decrotive aspect?

That's a tough, tough call. I went through the exact same thing with Tree of Life, and opted to keep the RE's in the game. Some people probably fault me for that, but I guess other people applaud me for it(?) All I know is that there is SO MUCH you can do with RE's, you just have to reward people for their efforts with a variety of enemy drops, and a plethora of enemies and enemy skills to keep things interesting. You already have provided a way for players to avoid the RE's if they want, until they want to deal with them.

After playing through your demo though...I would say to keep those battles in there. They really do add to the story, IMO.

Honestly, I think Holy-Chaos is shipping up to be a really really great game, and it would be enjoyable either way!

Well, Lausen, after reading through your first post a couple of times, it seems (from the third paragraph at least) that you might be leaning in the direction of getting rid of the REs. That would be fine with me. However, keeping some of them in might be enjoyable to some people.

Maybe you could continue doing what you did in the demo. The random battles can be bypassed by staying on paths. That way, too, you wouldn't have to create as many kinds of monsters.

Well, you know what kind of game you'd rather play. Maybe that would be a good way to figure out which route you'd like to go in. It's just cool to see that things are progressing well with your game.

I really want to have the random encounters. I think I found a pretty good balance with the ones in the demo. I'm the kind of person that doesn't mind them in anyones game. I even think they have added a few games I played. I've been sitting here think about the pros and cons and as much as I want the RE's it might take from the game. Because of memory there might not be a very good verity and that could very well kill the game. Fighting the same people over and over isn't fun.

On the other hand you can add many chest's and decretive to the one monster. By adding more NPC's and little details to the dungeons and more interactive events that could definitely add to the game. I also could make more little extra dungeons you can find stuff in. Mainly Cryolite (Teaches people skill's and magic) and because the battles you do get into would be more strategic you would want those skills giving the player extra incentive to explore.

I agree with you Obi about enemy drops. Those are one of my favorite features with the battles. This is going to kill me trying to decide. I won't really know until I find out the exact space I'll have for each Memory slot. I just don't want to commit and then find out I won't have space and have to try and deal with that.

After doing some thinking I thought about possibly being able to add some RE's. I could add them to the unpopulated areas, and not near the populated ones. That could be realilistic. For example not have any in the Naharic Domain, but have some in the Galic Mountains.

I'm not going to rush this decision. Thanks for the imput guys. It's really helpful.

Well I've been thinking about this for a couple of days now and I think I want to have a bit of a mix of RE's and event based battles. I have more then 20% on each slot so I should have the space. It will mosty focus on the event based batttles though. I want just a few areas to have the RE's where say you need to get a certain enemy drop for a side quest, and for a bit of training if the player wants it. In short the people who don't like RE's won't have to worry and the people that don't mind them could get rewarded for it. I also think this will help to make the game not so long.

I think I may try to have all battles similer to the "battle tower" side quest in my demo. The reason I didn't want to go with that way at first was because with the whole thing being RE's the balancing would have been hell. For those that don't know what I'm talking about it's like Ivan Rosenguard's speeded up battle system. At the begining just increase all people you fight's speed up to 999.

The biggest problem with this change is that I had/have to change around some dungeons. That wouldn't be a big deal except I have to do it on two different slots and don't have a camera to take a picture of what it's layout is. I have to hand draw it. I've done one dungeon already.

I still have some time before I start with any battles so things could change.

You know Lausen this game seems so anticipated you should start selling it! I know I would buy it!

It's just that I've been talking about it ever sense I thought of the idea. If you introduce an idea here on the pav and follow up on it, it will get more attention because people have known about it from the start. I just hope people don't expect too much out of it. I will deliver what I can and let people think what they want.
